If I had to describe the difference between AiME and LOTR 5e I would say that AiME is akin to the movies while LOTR 5e akin to the books. Another and probably better example is AiME is attempting to recreate the DND experience in ME, while LOTR is attempting to recreate ME with the 5e rules set.
I can sum it up by saying AiME can be used for tables wanting high level DND action. You have 20 levels, access to quick healing, standard long and short rest, and magic that could be presented like it is in Dnd. In LOTR 5e the magic is there but it is more subtle and the characters are heroic rather than super-heroic as LOTR 5e has a level cap at 10 and it is a more streamlined game.

Horrifically neutered version f the great AIME rules. Everything that made AIME great is missing - so few choices and races, severely nerfed classes and no higher-level play.

Same things as One Ring II, a castrated version of a great game. What a waste of a great IP.

I am a longtime fan of Tolkien, and play D&D for 25 years. I have followed closely all projects made in the last 3 decades regarding Lord of the rings adaptations for Dungeons & Dragons, and I can say that this one is, by far, the best ever made. Even tough Lord of the rings inspired a great part of D&D bases, the game has moved further and further from its original concepts and from Tolkien’s works. AD&D was a game about noble adventurers venturing to fight evil, but D&D 5e is more of a “superheroes” game that resemble very little of the adventuring party that we used to know and love; characters were too powerful, magic was made completely mundane (every class has access to it). Recovering from injuries is easier in D&D than in videogames and every character at high levels could take even Morgoth down. On could ask how would be possible to adapt a game like this to the mythology and beauty of Tolkien’s works. But Free League did it, and in a very competent way. The character classes are interesting and very balanced (something that does not happen in D&D 5e) and represent perfectly the essence of adventuring in Middle-earth. The magic is subtle and hard to get, but powerful in the right way; you won’t be able to build a Gandalf, but can still create a very interesting conjurer and magi user. The classes go only up to level 10, which makes complete sense considering we are adventuring in the lands where Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Frodo and so many more have ventured. Adventurers can be powerful and competent, but they are not superheroes. The “magical recovery through rests” of D&D 5e has no place here. Traveling is something important, and you constantly have to face and resist the influences of the Dark Lord. The word is a beautiful, but dangerous place, and you are a noble adventurer, doing your best to halt the advancing of darkness and fight so others may live in peace. This book is everything D&D should be. As a D&D old fan and an unconditional admire of Tolkien, I cannot recommend this book enough. This is the best D&D AND Tolkien RPG book that we had in so many years. The book is very well organized, the artwork is fitting and magnificent. If you love D&D (what it was, at least) and Tolkien, buy this book. You won’t regret it.

For those already playing The One Ring, the Lord of the Rings Roleplaying core book will not provide anything new as it's a faithful conversion of that roleplaying game to 5E. In fact, the location descriptions, introductory adventure, layout, and artwork are all the same. However, for those wanting to bring Middle-earth to their diehard 5E group, then Lord of the Rings Roleplaying is the only game in town (that's currently available) and an outstanding one at that. There are enough changes to the 5E rules to make this feel like Lord of Rings, but not so much that 5E players will have trouble figuring it out. See my full review here for a detailed look at the contents: https://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/19/19133.phtml

There is a common misunderstanding that Tolkiens works are "low magic". (They are full of magic, but the effects commonly subtile.) This has lead to the most lazy "magic system" I have ever seen for a Lotr rpg. It is based on "Magical successes" which is basically autopassed skill tests.

A more streamlined take on the previous AiME effort to bring Middle Earth to 5E. I have not yet brought this to table, but I think it will be a bit less taxing on the GM and an easier entry for the players.

This is rather unfair, as I have the previous Adevntures in Middle-Earth to compare this revised edition too. The previous edition did a really great job at describing the people and lands of Middle Earth, and the looming conflict with the Shadow of Mordor. I did purchase the first two books, and I am underwhelmed and somewhat dissapointed. It is rather hard again, to have a revised edition.... the artwork is its own style.... but it lacks the vibrancy the previous series had. The feel and themes are the same.... but this one seems bland. Unlike the prevous edition, the numbers of race options are reduced... staying within the western kingdoms. Three of the classes seem unchanged much, but the others such are different. I am not a publisher, just a consumer.... but given the fact that this is a revised/rebooted system... perhaps concentrate more on new/unpublished material. Like Moria that so many of us are waiting for. I know it gonna be hard, giving that the Lord of the Rings as an RPG has a ton of older material written out that somes up many things. Alot of the ground work has already been laid....retreading on it seems well...not worth my time or money. I am hoping that the series starts heading into this direction of new or underdevloped territory , especially since the IP has had a seriously blow....
