The following review was originally published in Mephisto 62 and translated from German (find orignal German review below).

Ghouls & Revenants

Ghouls & Revenants is the source book about ghouls and revenants for Vampire. The source book begins by describing the themes and moods used when playing with ghouls. Then there follows a long chapter describing the different roles of ghouls but also of the revenant families. The chapter explores the origins of the ghouls and gives some hints on the bigger background story of Vampire. The fact that ghouls are given a more important role can be seen, for example, in the four age groups, because ancient ghouls are also mentioned, which are very powerful and initiated into many secrets.

The second chapter is dedicated to the rules and above all to the blood bond that determines the existence of many ghouls. However, other mechanisms such as the handling of disciplines, aging, healing, frenzy, clan weaknesses etc. are also dealt with. This is followed by a chapter on the role of the ghouls, which shows how the various sects deal with them. A section is dedicated to each of the established clans, describing the particularities and tasks of their ghouls. Also some organizations of the ghouls themselves are presented, which have the potential for further conspiracies.

The revenants are presented with their contradictory history and the different families. It quickly becomes clear that there are some secrets entwined around the families.

Central element is the character creation, which describes the different steps and characteristics for ghouls. This also means that new skills, backgrounds and advantages/disadvantages are introduced. The conclusion is a narrative chapter that highlights various aspects and peculiarities when using ghouls as player characters. A number of sample ghouls including animal ghouls, Szlachta and Vozhd complete the book.

Ghouls & Revenants presents the subject of ghouls and revenants very comprehensively and offers a successful mixture of rules and background information. The key question for deciding to buy is what role you want to give ghouls in the game: This book is certainly too extensive for a mere marginal appearance, but those who want to work with ghouls as player characters will not be able to ignore this book. And also those who want to get to know the complete world of darkness will find interesting approaches here.

(Deutsche Version)

http://www.teilzeithelden.de/2017/03/15/rezension-vampire-the-masquerade-v20-ghouls-revenants-white-wolf/

Dracula hatte seinen Renfield, Graf Duckula seinen Igor.

Blood is Life

Ghouldom, Blood Bonds, and Systems

Clan Ghouls and Organizations

Revenants and their Families

Storytelling

Appendix I + II

I found the book kind of dull, actually. It's not terrible, but it's not great either, and not at all requred to use or even play the source material. It borrows heavily from Fatal Addiction, while also adding a bithereand there to the mix, some of it good and some not so much. It also seemed the writers where not too clear on the differences between Ghouls and Revenants, or just didn't differentiat between them enough in the text.

I was not a fan of Ghoul weaknesses, and in particular the fact that a few of them actually just translate into some Clans getting a new FREE power when they make a Ghoul, which is intended to be a weakness for the Ghoul if you choose to play one. However, as most of them either easily identify the Ghoul as a Ghoul of a certain Clan, it also really defeats a lot of the point for Ghouls.

I also found it very questionable that the book enforces that 99% of vampires are jerks, mistreating their Ghouls, if not purposefully abusing them in various ways, (physical, mental, social, sexual, body horror other), just because, which sort of reminds me of the old school mentality that all Clans are monoliths of thier stereotype. I'm sorry, that's dumb.

I don't want to come off as sounding like it was all bad, which it wasn't, and there are a lot of good little bits in there. I wish that there was a lot more development on Cleavers, Animal Ghouls, and some more Ghoul groups. Mention of Thin-Bloods would have also been appropriate and cool. And I really liked the idea that, in the Camarilla, a Ghoul could potentially hold a better position of authority than some vampires.

Except for the chapter headers and a few other choice pieces, I didn't care for the art.

Please go back to Black and White. Color, but color art especially really breaks the mood for Vampire. Color is not an upgrade in this case.

Merits and Flaws seemed very odd to me, but didn't like the idea that unless you buy a 3 Point Merit, your Domiter doesn't like or care about you.

All in all, 2 Stars seemed to low. 2.5, if it where an option seems about right, but I went with 3.

Having played Vampire the Masquerade since it's inception, I have read many excellent and a few not so excellent books. Ghouls and Revenants is one the better books I have read.

This book answers a demand that I'm not sure many fans had. Right in the credits, there is a thank you to a group at 'L.A. by Night' whose enthusiasm led to the creation of this book, a book that seems written for a VERY specific audience. If you weren't at the L.A. event, you'll find this adds very little of substance to Vampire: the Masquerade twenty or so years after the still preferable Ghouls: Fatal Addiction.

There is some good here. The fiction and art look great for the most part, and the attempts to get inside the head of a ghoul Bound to a vampire is nicely done, but there is little recommend this book otherwise.

Discussion of running or playing a ghoul-centric chronicle lacks much in terms of persuasive reasoning beyond saying it's a challenge. The mechanics for doing so bog-down in pages and pages of Merits and Flaws that do not really fit in World of Darkness. The ghouls themselves are presented as 'splats' for the respective Clans of vampires that make ghouls, but there is prescious little in the text offer differences between a Gangrel ghoul and a Lasombra ghoul beyond what you'd find as differences between those two Clans. The revenant 'splats' fair little better in presenting dry history and sterile description of fashion. Somehow the D'habi and Bratovich are wrung of anything scary in their write-ups, and the newly elevated Rossellini and shiny new Kairouan Brotherhood come across as, frankly, a little boring. This lack of feeling carries throughout the book.

V20 Ghouls and Revenants is a nearly bloodless stab at making the mortals who accept the blood of Caine into something valuable, but its lack of passion leaves the book difficult to justify. I'd expected more from Onyx Path and the V20 line.

It is an expanded rehash of the "Gilded Cage" with other pieces bolted on. This book is useful if you have a very ghoul focused campaign, but otherwise it is kind of flat.

The Introduction begins by running through some basic definitions. A ghoul is a servant to a vampire, who has given said loyal servant some of his blood - thus giving the ghoul increased life and strength, access to Disciplines and all in a being who can still go out in the daytime (possibly the most useful thing!). Revenants are members of a family who has been magically altered and bred to naturally produce vitae for themselves. Opinions in vampire society differ about the creation of ghouls, from outright condemnation to fears that they threaten the Masquerade, but they are just so darn useful that many vampires make use of them even if they don't really want to admit to it. Above all they are loyal: perhaps through fear or addiction, but often out of self-interest - they like the powers they can attain or even hope one day to become vampires themselves - and many develop a blood bond with their masters.

This book sets out to spotlight ghouls and revenants, although they have already appeared in earlier books, and contain rules for creating player character ghouls and revenants as well as NPC sidekicks for vampire characters. Pre-generated ones are supplied (use them if you're in a rush or want an NPC one), and there's a wealth of detail about how to use them in your game and even how to centre your game around ghouls rather than vampires... it's an intriguing thought, perhaps a party of ghouls vying for their NPC master's attention or collaborating to keep him safe. There's also a lot of deep background about how various grouping of vampires view ghouls and revenants, and on the history of revenants and their families.

Chapter 1: Blood is Life details what it's like to be a ghoul. There is plenty of deep background for those who wish to delve into the history and philosophy of this state - and plenty of ideas spring out as you read for how you can use ghouls in your game, or build an entire chronicle around them. Roles for ghouls include servant, concierge, protector or bodyguard and even driver, or a trusted one may even be a confidante, someone to whom the vampire can unburden themselves. This chapter also covers the recruitment of ghouls and their day-to-day life and relationship with 'their' vampire.

Chapter 2: Ghouldom, Blood Bonds and Systems blurs in character detail with game mechanical information as it looks at how the ghoul's relationship with the vampire who created him grows and develops. It also discusses what happens to the ghoul physically as his new condition takes hold. There is also information on the inherent dangers involved...

Next, Chapter 3: Clan Ghouls and Organisations surveys how ghouls and revenants are viewed by other members of the undead community. Of course, the 'party line' and how individual vampires actually behave are often vastly different, something worth playing up. This background material may come in useful when selecting the sect and clan of the vampire to whom a player-character ghoul is bound, or building intrigue once your game is up and running. And, of course, ghouls form their own organisations too, and you can find out about them here.

Then, Chapter 4: Revenants and their Families goes into detail about these strange mutated bloodlines, how they operate and what they are like. It seems they've been around a long time, if the histories are to be believed. Sample families are provided, ready to weave into your own chronicles. Once your appetite is whetted by all this material, Chapter 5: Character Creation provides you with the tools to dive in and begin to create your own ghouls and revenants ready for play. It's similar to the standed Vampire system with its own specific quirks and choices.

Moving on to Storyteller territory, Chapter 6: Storytelling is jam-packed with ideas for ghoul-based games, replete with plot devices and storytelling seeds and covering everything from getting started to creating the right mood and managing a whole bunch of ghouls and revenants. And of course, you can use ghouls as antagonists in a more traditional vampire-centred game. There's plenty on the different types of chroncile you might run, bursting with ideas that just about make you want to grab some dice and go in search of some players... and the book then winds up with appendices covering a Gallery of Ghouls, ready-made for you to use, and a selection of Animal Ghouls and Monstrous Creations.

This work forms a useful expansion to the Vampire world and can be used in so many different ways, from running a game based around ghouls and revenants rather than their vampire masters to embuing your vampires' servitors with a wealth of rich detail. Definitely worth adding to your library!

This book is fantastic. Easily the best book Onyx Path has done. If you're a fan of V20, or Masquerade in general, you should purchase this book. The art is great(Borja Puig should draw ALL THE ART), and the mechanics and fiction are all top notch. Well done, OP!
