Olde Swords Reign

Auf die Wunschliste >
Empfohlener Preis €1,84

Olde Swords Reign is a tabletop roleplaying game based on 5th Edition but designed with emergent gameplay in mind. It’s faster, a tad deadlier, and relies more on player creativity to problem-solve than the options on a character sheet.

This game is now free so enjoy it. Come over to our website osreign.com and join in the community.

Universal mechanics run through the game that speed up gameplay, make improvisation easier for both players and GMs as well as helping to make rulings a little more intuitive and consistent.

You can pick up and play any old-school module or OSR adventure but still have that 5e framework.
Being based on the 5e ruleset, it can be played with any of the bigger Virtual Table Tops (VTTs) that have 5e rulesets and most of the rules can also be easily dropped into your regular 5e game.

These are the complete rules, everything a GM needs to run a game but also included is a separate players guide to share with your table.

What Are Some of the Differences Between 5E and OSR?

  • Simplified Classes and Races - Only 4 classes and 4 races but all have a huge amount of flexibility
  • No Subclasses - Subclasses are gone, speeding up character creation and allowing you to change direction as your character develops
  • Classes stop at level 12 - This is a game of adventurers, not superheroes. You get what you earn, and if you’re lucky, retire as a legend.
  • Skills Replaced by Backgrounds - Who you are and what you know matters. Add your proficiency bonus to any non-combat related checks that relate to your background, this, combined with straight ability checks replaces skills.
  • Feats & Hindrances - The feat system allows you to create any character concept you can come up with using the 4 base classes. Hindrances add a little more flavor to make your character a little more creating more opportunities for shenanigans.
  • Simplified Difficulty Classes (DC) - An intuitive fixed DC system makes ruling much easier.
  • Simplified Range and Movement - Movement and Speed are split into simple ranges
  • Spell Lists - Over 120 spells that go to level 6.
  • 110 Monsters
  • Monster Hit Dice - Monsters all have d8 Hit Die, like the original rules supplements.
  • Simplified Monster Creation and Conversion - Monsters XP, to hit bonus, saving throw, and more are all based on their Hit Die, making running, converting and creating them a breeze.

Great work on these rules. Simple, fun game in the OSR style of D&D but with some nice additions and changes that make the game easier to play.

How hard would it be to use this instead of actual 5e to run 5e stuff?

Hey Gary, Not that hard and a little hard depending on what you are looking to do. Most of the systems in the game can be picked up and dropped seamlessly into a 5e game. The only place you might come into problems is the monster conversion but there is a guide at the back of the book. The big difference is the hit points and damage output. In 5e, especially when you scale, there is a lot of Hit Point bloat and as a result, the damage output is much higher.
But if you are not precious you could convert everything on the fly just using the HD of the monsters (which gives you almost everything you need) and lowering the damage. I did a video on playing keep which might help a little https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTLNd9Q4Gg4
you can always jump on the forum and ask any questions you want there https://osreign.com/

I went ahead and grabbed this but I have to say I've had the originals purchased. I love this system, Damien, I hope you continue with this. I had the pleasure of speaking with Scott Meyer a long time ago around the time he was working on another game and he was very pleasant and chill. It's an excellent blend of 5e and the osr. Time was taken to make sure the art work cohesive. I wish Fumble Table and the whole team the best of luck and I hope to see more (especially the expansions with the added races and classes from the original edition.) Once I am able to leave a review I'm giving it 5 stars.

Can I easily run something like TSR's The Keep on the Borderlands module using Olde Swords Reign? Goodman Games also has a 5e conversion of The Keep on the Borderlands. Which would you recommend running with Ollde Swords Reign - the original adventure designed for Basic D&D, or the new conversion designed for D&D 5e?

Hey Brian.
I wrote it to pretty much be able to convert the old TSR modules on the fly. I've run the original keep several times straight from the booklet. My usual go-to is the go through with a couple of highlighters first. With monsters as long as you know the HD of the monster you know its hp and to hit bonus. With the AC just subtract the descending ac from 20.
Doing a conversion video has been on my to-do list for a long time. It's raining so I'll see if I can get one done today.

I pulled them from print a couple of weeks ago when I started to work on rewriting the book to release as creative commons. I'll be adding the new one to this product when it's done so everyone who's bought/buys a pdf will get it. It may take a little while though.

I've bought the paperback version, and downloaded the character sheet.
Where does "passive perception" under Senses on the character sheet get worked out, or what is it for? Can't see anything in the book about it (unless its the Passive Checks section?)
Doesn't get mentioned in the index at all, so I could be missing something?

Hey Brian, sorry for the delay. Yes, its the passive checks section. With the removal of skills it's your passive wisdom score. Thanks for pointing it out, I'll get the character sheet updated to reflect that.

I just picked this one up. I'm excited to see what you've done, a quick scan through looks amazing. I remember the earlier versions. This looks much more polished. And, I love that you made a Player's Book and included it with the Core Book, genius move. But, can I legit share the Player's Book PDF with my players or was it intended to distribute by hardcopy at the table? I know a lot of people extract and share the player's section but I also make stuff for games so I try not to do anything remotely shady.

Is this an A5 page format? I usually get my stuff printed at a local shop with a coil-bind and they're generally metric.

Slight grump... no bookmarks? I will probably get it printed but bookmarks are definitely useful for digital copies. Also, a form-fillable character sheet would be wonderfully useful.

Hey Jeremy. I thought I'd sorted the bookmarks. I'd hyperlinked most of the document but I mustn't have set the bookmarks up correctly. I'll get on that over Xmas when things have quietened down. Feel free to share the player's handbook, it's there for your players.
I'm currently running an open-table game at a local cafe and have created a print-at-home quick-start booklet for levels 1-2. It's still very rough but I plan on releasing it over the holidays when I can tidy it up. It might be what you need.

I make TTRPG stuff too, mostly monster books and art. But I've run into that before too. Lots of little things to check on PDF export. Would your Olde Swords Reign be compatible with 5e monsters (mainly built off the SRD)? I have a fair bit of 5e-compatible monsters with an "OSR" vibe. Just zines in my 5e line so far but I'll probably release a chonky omnibus soon. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse/pub/5679/Jeremy-Hart

There are instructions on how to convert in the book, but its fairly easy to convert on the fly once you've played a few times. It's the same with OSE or other OSR monsters. I picked up and ran a basic fantasy module on Monday straight from the book with no issues converting.

Hey Brian
There are some differences, in particular classes and feats. There are also some additions to the book with wilderness and dungeon procedures. You can download the full character creation chapter as the free preview and there is a more in-depth walkthrough here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7BLOp5FuaE
But any adventures released in the future should be compatible with either version. You can always jump on our discord to get any questions answered as well. https://discord.gg/JzZdWXvW

Hey Matteo, thanks for buying the book, I hope you enjoy it.
I'm sorry, I might have missed something but as far as I can see the table of contents is on page 1 for both the complete and players guide versions. They should both have an index as well. I can see it on the preview as well.
Can you clarify what you mean and I'll get it fixed straight away. You can always jump on our discord and chat with me directly they're if that's easier.

Hey Dani, It's completely compatible with older versions and everything released in the future versions will also be so there is no need to buy unless you see value in the changes and extra content that's been created.

I've included the entire character creation chapter in the preview and made an in-depth walk-through which you can see here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7BLOp5FuaE.

Which should hopefully help you decide if it's worth getting. Also if you head to our Facebook page you should get a link to our discord where you can find out anything that i've missed.
