Doors to Darkness

This product is not suitable for beginning Keepers.

Cover and interior art are impressive and fitting. The five scenarios have nice but not surprising plots. Their storylines have several weak spots, where players and keeper could struggle to keep the story going (which should have been avoided when writing for beginning keepers). Suggestions to engage the players with the plot include railroading and punishing the characters for not following the intended path.

None of the scenarios make use of an intelligent and captivating hook for the pre-generated characters, which have thin backgrounds and are missing entries. More fleshed-out pre-gens could have helped new players get into their roles.

The scenarios are made up of detailed and long texts. Keepers need to work through them to get the relevant information. New Keepers profit from concise summaries and a clear structure of information.

The accessibility of the material is low. On some of the handouts, font, font size and contrast make reading a challenge. The content of the handouts is not provided in the text. Furthermore, none of the pdfs of this product could be used with adobe screen reader or NVDA.

The topic of safety and consent when playing horror games is not mentioned. New Keepers need to be aware that the content of the scenario can have an impact on players and Keeper. The possibility of installing safety measures needs to be addressed. Opposed to this, the Keepers introduction goes as far as to suggest a possible harming of the players.

Find out what scares your players (or their investigators) and make use of those fears if possible (p. 12).

This is under no circumstances ever acceptable advice!

Reviewing as a Keeper who has never before run a scenario in the Invictus setting. This is an excellent scenario and an enjoyable read. It also has very good background information on the setting itself, the luxurious home of the roman upper class.

Plot: excellent, simple, effective cosmic horror with optional connections to the mythos or other scenarios.

NPC: very well constructed main characters and sufficient background for the supporting cast.

Prep: very well-organized material, easy to prepare, even suggestions for further research into the setting.

Feel: excellent descriptions and notes to support the essential roman decadence.

Looking forward to running more ancient world scenarios from this author.

Reviewing as a Keeper who is preparing this adventure to run with a group of 4. This is an excellent scenario and an enjoyable read.

Plot: excellent, simple, effective, and very easy to implement in a campaign. NPC: two very well constructed characters with defined purpose, easy to handle. Prep: excellently organized material for two locations, easy to prepare. Feel: very good descriptions and notes.

Looking forward to seeing my players enjoy a good night’s rest at Mrs. Jones’ impromptu hotel.

Reviewing as a Keeper who is preparing this adventure to run with a group of 4.

This is an excellent scenario and an enjoyable read. Plot: excellent take on the technical aspect of interaction with the Mythos. NPC: very well constructed characters with traits and hooks. Prep: very well-organized material, easy to prepare, checkpoints are very helpful. Feel: excellent descriptions and notes to support the “70s computer science gone wrong” setting.

Looking forward to seeing my players struggle through the drastic show down.
