Urban Shadows (2nd Ed.) Quickstart
Verlag: Magpie Games
von Rick S. [Verifizierter Käufer]
Hinzugefügt am: 12/15/2022 07:24:15

Lately, I've come across several RPG's which say they are 'Powered by the Apocalyse' (PbtA). This game system must be good if so many other games are copying it, right? Urban Shadows - Quickstart (US-Q), is PbtA and its free! I figured I would down-load this, and in one reading of the rules become an expert, er, know a little bit about PbtA.

A thing about my tastes, I am not a fan of 'urban fantasy'. Generally, I want my fantasy literature to be in fantastic settings and stories written in realistic settings to be realistic. So US-Q has a couple of big strikes against it right off the bat. I'm not going to game master this, I have no interest in playing this game - I don't care about it, and I'm not fond of the genre. I'm just reading it to see what PbtA is about.

This game IMPRESSED me.

PbtA is a rule light RPG. That is fine, there are many such. In US-Q everyone has a bunch of common moves, and their architype has some specific moves. The key thing is that most of these moves, create drama, and add connections and relationships between PC's and NPC's. This is cool, I can understand why PbtA is a flexible system and creators will want to use its ideas.

But the 'faction moves' are what really made me take note. Each player belongs to their own faction which they want to grow and prosper. There are faction moves, which ALSO help create drama, and add connections and relationships between opposing factions and other PC's and NPC's. (The factions and architypes are further organized by circles which adds another excuse for tension.)

Wow! As a GM I have been creating complex plots for my PC's to enjoy / dismantle. But in this game, a GM can relax a lot more. The game mechanics will generate a lot of storylines. The players will do a lot of the work of creating problems and goals for them to dive into. The GM can sit back, adjudicate questions between PC's in conflict, and occasionally stir the drama pot to keep things bubbling.

US-Q has a lot of clever ideas.

I strongly recommend this game, if you have ANY interest in urban fantasy in a noir setting. It is gorgous, and feels like a labour of love by the creators.

Warm regards, Rick.

Shepherd of Moths - a Zgrozy scenario
Verlag: Chaosium

Hinzugefügt am: 11/19/2022 01:33:32

I was a bit torn, what I really wanted to do is give this a 4.5 rating, I compromised on 5/5 stars.

This is a very good scenario. It has a unique bad guy, the situation is morally complex, and it is more interesting than most CoC scenarios I've read. However, it is very short, I really wanted more material. (I can't complain too much, it cost me ~$2.50.)

The moral dilemma is the most interesting part of the scenario, but giving the PC's enough information so that they know what is at stake, feels forced. Some more clues and hints would be welcome.

The 'extra visions' by contest winners were kinda fun, but I would have rather that the two pages were used by the author to give more stuff. The contest winners did not know everything in the scenario, so they didn't match what was going on. If I were to use some of them, I would have to adjust them, and anytime a purchased product forces me to fix something, I consider it a flaw.

All that said, I recommend this as a short, one evening adventure.

Warm regards, Rick.

This, to me, is an ideal product. Inexpensive, and chock full of detailed work that it would take me hours and hours to reproduce. It has 3 interesting adventures, but one of them is the Australia chapter from Masks of Nyarlathotep (which I already own). Hopefully Chaosium republishes this for CoC 7th edition, with a new adventure to replace the 'Masks' adventure.

I recommend this product. Warm regards, Rick.

Pass The Giggle Water
Verlag: Chaosium

This is an inexpensive, amateur, product for Call of Cthulhu. Set in Arkham, an evil politician is poisoning booze to craze and kill drinkers in order to panic the public. Frightened voters are compliant voters. There are several things I dislike about this product.

First it feels like the author got this product 80% done and ran out of steam. The manuscript could use an editing pass to clean up sentence structure and make some ideas clearer. There is a speakeasy, with 8 keyed locations, but some of them have been left out. There is a nice area of handouts and maps at the back, but two important maps are missing. Some random mythos monsters are dropped in (with no logic or explanations) for the PC's to fight. There are ludicrously dangerous traps. (Oops, I made a mistake, I die and EVERYONE in the building dies as well.) There are no SAN rewards at the end for successfully handling the adventure.

I would rework how the 'infected' character's disease progresses, to make the poisoning more interesting and more horrific.

There are some nice ideas here, but basically the mystery is linear. The PC's will have to do some specific things to keep the adventure on track.

I paid under a dollar, so I can't get too worked up about my money being wasted, but be aware that this is like 85% of an adventure. Game Masters will have to roll up their sleeves and FINISH this adventure.

I appreciate your input, and cant disagree with your assessment. It was written very quickly for a class, and was not playtested or edited by an outside eye. I should have stated that in the description. It was supposed to be written as a quick one shot. I do plan on updating and completing it. I will definitely take the observations you made under advisement. Thank you for taking the time to review it.

I think that a few monsters had to be cut from the published book, and they were added here as a free download. If you own Cthulhu Invictus (Rome), this is a automatic download, free, and you get some more fun monsters. Thank you Chaosium, for releasing this.

Warm regards, Rick.

Call of Cthulhu: Hometown Horrors, Vol. 1

I was dissapointed by this product, mainly because I was expecting more. Each home town is described by a single page of text. (Some have two pages, but the second page consist of photos.) How much can you pack into a single page? Not much. The adventure hooks are usually 2 to 4 breathless sentences which sketch a mystery, but all the work is left to the keeper.

If they had one third as many towns, but each had 6 to 10 pages of material I would feel the product would be worth the price.

That said, how good are these short sketches of the towns? Some succeed in making the towns seem interesting, others are dull, or have 'adventure hooks' I would never use.

The cover art is fun and evokative.

My overall feeling is 'meh', and a wish I had spent my money more wisely.

Warm regards, Rick.

Call of Cthulhu: Devil's Swamp

Hinzugefügt am: 10/01/2022 22:11:27

I've mixed feelings on this adventure. The art is great, and the price for 8 adventures is very good. On the other hand, almost all of the stories are linear, (almost rail-roady), and too many of them are variations on 'save someone who is in the swamp'.

Things I like: -- Background info on the Hockomock swamp in Massachusetts, (a real, 'haunted' swamp). -- Two new spells. (I don't know of any other place they were published). -- The Migo base felt nicely horrific, and more fleshed out than other such bases I've read in adventures. -- Some of the horrors were not standard Mythos fair out of the book.

My favorite two adventures are: "Deeper than skin" and "Canned Articles".

Things I disliked: -- Things that seem to make sense but don't. The sidereal year for Jupiter is the period between strange effects, but why? The story has nothing to do with Jupiter, the sidereal year is not when Jupiter is closest to Earth, it is not when Jupiter is between Earth and some distant star. It feels like a random clue that does not lead anywhere. -- Often the Sanity rewards for doing good are better than the sanity lost in the adventure. If you are confronted with the horrors of the Mythos, it should not sooth you and make you more sane. -- I wish that the swamp encounters were split into natural dangers and mythos dangers. I like to keep the Mythos as much in the background (and fairly rare) as possible. -- Some text is repeated several times. If you go to the Library for the 3rd time, telling us something new about it would be nice, rather than repeating the same text again and again.

Overall, not great, not horrible. Warm regards, Rick.

My players and I quite enjoyed this adventure, a good 1 session romp. I wish there was more than one hook into the adventure, (because my players are not in tight with Arkham University), but I cobbled together a reason for them to head off on it. The mythos was low key, which is good, since I prefer when mind blasting horrors are not coming out of the walls every week. It was also refreshing that the law were not a bunch of idiots in this adventure.

Summary: A well crafted adventure at a great price. (I paid $2.99 for the *.pdf.)

I was REALLY impressed with this product, all of the adventures are good or excellent. In most collections of 5 (say) adventures, there are one or two that I'm sure I'll never run, but all of these got me thinking that I could use them (maybe with some changes). The art and quality of the production are gorgous, better than any Chaosium product I've seen. I am seriously thinking of buying more Stygian Fox products; they have impressed me.

Has the feel of an amature product. A REALLY GOOD amature production. It is not quite a polished as I would like, and could use a good editor, but there is a interesting story here. For a while I thought it was a bit predictable, but it subverted my expectations, and ended up a very origional story. And you can't beat the price.

I hope the author publishes more works.

Non-mythos adventures based on B Horror Movies. 13 short adventures, I would say 8 are excellent, 3 are good, and 2 are dull. (Looking at you zombie apocolyse.) Also several adventures felt like they were playing it for laughs more than I was happy with. (Tho, you don't have to GM it that way of course.) I don't feel that this is quite a 5 star product, I would rate it 4.5 stars. If you like the idea of low-budget-movies horror, this is a must buy. Even if you are looking for some non-Cthulhu adventures to mix things up a bit, I would suggest you consider this.

Good but not great.

This product is a good product that does what it sets out to do, but there is not much new if you understand the basics of economics. Several basic things are left out. They go in great detail to calculate the price of a loaf of bread. But is this enough bread to feed a person for a meal, or for a day?

I would like to know what the cost of living for a year is for a slave, a poor peasant, yeoman, a couple levels of craftsman, a knight and a lord. A table like this would very quickly tell me how to multiply costs for their economic system to adjust it to the one in my game.

A huge number of calories came from beer in the middle ages. So much so, that modern scientists sometimes call beer and ale 'liquid bread'. This is ignored in this product. (Altho, if I knew the yearly cost of living above, I wouldn't be trying to figure this out.)

The price of metal goods seems a bit low. It takes a lot of work to dig up the ore, pump water out of the mines, mine the flux, bring the flux & ore together, chop down a huge amount of wood, bury the wood to make charcoal, slowly burn the wood. Dig the charcoal back up. Bring the charcoal to the ore and flux, smelt all that into pig iron. THEN you are ready to to make steel. Then you can make a sword. I could easily see the prices for metal items being double what they are in this book.

However, that is the limit of the not nice things to say. The product basically looks at the cost of labour and logically figures out what things can cost. At the back of the book, is a huge list of prices, with mulitpliers for how far it has been traded.

A nice product. Warm regards, Rick.
