If you’re looking for a more role-play focused tabletop RPG book that is not Cthulhu but still focused on interesting and unique horror elements, this is it. I’ve played a one-shot with it and it was genuinely a good time. It did help that the GM already had a bunch of prior knowledge about the SCP universe in general, and I do think you need to be somewhat interested in the universe to get into it, but the book covers a lot of it so it’s a great base to get started. I really like the addition of exploding dice where you get to roll a bonus dice whenever you roll a maximum number on an attribute check die. Another cool addition is the drama cards. With drama cards any player can interrupt the GM and interject something else that suddenly happens. This can create things like distractions but also change npc behavior towards you, or just a little joke card you can toss in. It really helps create a more interactive experience with the GM. Of course the GM has to be open to such changes in his story, but they are an addition and don’t have to be used. The only issues with it are that some systems are a little unnecessary complicated, but I know that the creator of this TTRPG is working very hard to fix any struggling systems into a more streamlined format so I do think that deserves a big plus.

Overall: Good base book to start your SCP tabletop adventures. A must have if you’re a big fan of the SCP universe and want to host your own TTRPG’s.

If you want to know more about the rules I’d really recommend checking out these videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afW716MaFC0 https://youtu.be/flQRKpJMgfw

this is a very fun, Unique, and refreshing game game system compared to the over done d20 system. The system of spending of EXP into your skills and dice to roll lets you progress your character every session in an a very fun way. it gives alot of options! I think its very important for the DM to try to get familar with the system going into a campaign because it is very unique. very cool character sheet designs i love the visuals for dice blocks that you shade in as you buy them. i could go on and on this game is absolutely amazing. i highly reccomend this game to anyone who is a SCP fan! P.S. Exploding dice kick ass

An incredibly lazy adaptation of a fan-favorite collaborative wiki. The dice system is a slog (decimals added to rolls? Really?), the selection of SCPs included is bizarre. Feels like a scam. The author also directly copy-pasted chunks of the site with seemingly no regard for what they were taking. You're better off burning your money.

The game is very good lorewise, and the equipment and info is good. Everything else is horrible. The system is clunky, complex, slow to make replacement chsracters and the characters die very easily. One of my pmayers lost his mtf soldier in two attacks from a very weak enemy, and he was the tank of the group. So, dont buy this, in my opinion, a hack of world of darkness ys better, and is what we are gonna use

An excellent entry in the already existing line-up of TTRPG's. Over the past 5 years, I have invested a lot of time in many different TTRPG's, such as Star Wars RPG from FFG but also Call of Cthulhu 7th edition from Chaosium. This TTRPG, however, brings several super unique (and fun) elements to the genre, such as the drama card system, where even players can influence the story by throwing some nice curveballs at the GM, and the mutilation mechanic, which implements a smooth way to introduce various damage types and permanent wounds characters can endure.

Overall, I would say the general rule system of this TTRPG flows pretty well, from the RP to the combat. When I first bought this book about 1 - 2 months ago, there were still some minor parts that really needed some rewording for clarification. I was happy to witness first-hand how quickly and passionately the creator responded to this, immediately going about to review and fix some of the issues.

With a fairly oversaturated market when it comes to TTRPG's, I'm happy to see that some writers still have the balls to try some new stuff to enhance the 30 - 40 year old formula and I think the SCP Tabletop RPG does a lot of things right in this regard.

For a more indepth view of the physical book itself, check out my review on youtube! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afW716MaFC0

Have a nice day and Secure. Contain. And Protect.

Ring Side Report-RPG Review of SCP The Tabletop RPG

Basics- Secure, Contain, Protect! SCP is probably the internet’s best and worst kept secret. The SCP is the largest collaborative storytelling project in the world, outside of the Lovecraft Mythos, and all of the Lovecraft Mythos fits into the SCP! The SCP is a clandestine organization that is lawful neutral at best, doing horrible things in the name of saving as many as they can. Players take the roles of SCP personnel, attempting to deal with the things that bump in the night and hopefully kill as few as they can along the way. Let’s look at the pieces.

Breakdown-

Base mechanics- Character generation is point buy, but you buy dice. When you do anything you roll up to four dice. From those four dice you take the maximum of two of them and add any skill ranks you have in the action. If you hit the difficulty, you succeed!

Dice-This game uses everything from D8s to d20s. When you buy dice, for every three D8s you buy, you can then buy 1d10. This gives you an extra bonus. For every two d10s you buy, you can buy a d12 and get an additional bonus. You can build an absolute unit for strength but if you can’t do intelligence actions, you will have some major problems! Remember your team when you build characters.

Exploding dice-If you roll the maximum result you get an extra dice that you roll and use. You can get some truly powerful rolls when your D12 explodes into a d20!

The rest-The rest of the system breaks down like most other similar systems with lots of skills. The skills are the bread and butter of this game as you focus your abilities to do awesome stuff.

Now the breakdown!

Mechanics or Crunch-This game feels like a fun remix of Savage Worlds. The idea of different sized dice and the mix of multiple dice means you get more average results. I love random dice, but sometimes you just get hosed by probability. When you throw four d12 at a problem, the law of averages doesn’t bite you as hard as it can, most of the time. It’s simple and easy to play. This system’s only problem is there are a ton of skills. The good of a ton of skills is you can truly build that character you have in mind. The bad of a ton of skills is your awesome mountain man can be lost in the big city as overspecialization is fun but if you are not keyed into the adventure, it can lead you to be sidelined. That's the only real issue I have with the crunch here, so this is a solid system!. 4.5/5

Theme or Fluff- SCP, are you the good guys or the bad guys? YES! The fluff here backs up the nature that the SCP are here to help, but maybe not here to help you in particular! If you want to play a morally grey character, then this gives you the solid background to do it well. 5/5

Execution- PDF? Yes. Hyperlinked? Yes. I like the layout, the text, and the makeup of the whole book. There are pregens and an adventure to get you playing right away. I really love how the character creation is set up with step by step instruction, even pointing to the areas on the character sheet. My one minor problem is some of the set up. The book divides itself based on the class of personnel. Which isn’t bad, but it means you have to go to multiple places to see all the toys and equipment. It's not a major issue, but a small annoyance. Otherwise, this is a solid book that shows how I want things done. 4.9/5

Summary- Let’s not be a bad guy, let’s not be a good guy, let’s be the one keeping everyone safe. The SCP is a fun playground where horrible things are done to prevent something even worse. That’s a fun setup and combined with solid mechanics and an amazing book this is well worth your money. If you like Savage Worlds and want the best collaborative horror you can find on the internet in your game, this is a solid addition to game night. 96%

https://www.teilzeithelden.de/2021/09/27/ersteindruck-scp-the-tabletop-rpg-secure-contain-protect/

Finally, as a self proclaimed slow reader, I got all the time I needed to read through the rulebook and tho I haven't got the chance to try it out in practice yet the system with all it's mechanics feels very well crafted and I am really excited to try it out! The rules are explained very understandable and even if there should be any questions the creator always helps with questions and requests on Discord. Speaking of Discord the community is helpful and active, too and it's really easy to get into the community due to their welcoming kindness. I witnessed positivity, humor, homebrewing and a lot of more fun things there, so give it a try and join the discord server. You can even find sample chapters about how the dice system or the character creation works, for example, so if you still don't know if the game is something for you maybe that little sneak peek can help you! I highly recommend this game and hope it continues getting the love it really deserves!

SCP the tabletop rpg is a fantastic game. Its extremely beginner friendly, right off the bat it tells you what SCP is and basics about ttrpgs in general such as what a GM is. Its a great game for beginners to the genre. It has some really cool and unique gameplay mechanics, such as the clearance level system that turns the entire book into a game mechanic, and the dice system is interesting and fun. Its also very balanced in complexity, not too rules heavy and not too simple. Its in a sweet spot of difficulty that makes it simple for new players and GMs to get into it. I recommend the book to any kind of ttrpg player, especially if your a fan of the SCP universe

This is some gold right here. As someone who's looked into other systems before but has only ever really played D&D 5th Edition, I found the rules very easy to learn, despite the present learning curve. The character sheet itself does look rather intimidating at first glance, but the book takes you through character creation in a very simple, very clear step-by-step process that breaks things down nicely without being too long-winded. I'm excited to bring this to my players and start our first game; I've been a fan of the SCP Community for a long time, so this book was a must-buy. However, even if you're not a major fan of the Foundation or its stories, I would argue that this RPG definitely deserves a spot on your shelf. It's rules system is fun, new, and engaging, and the ability for constant character evolution makes downtime something to look forward to.

I've bin reading threw it for the past couple days and I like what I see. I'm still learning cause this is a diffrent system then I am used to. I mainly just need to reread and make a cheat sheet. Once the charater sheet gets ported onto Roll20 (thanks covid). But I saw from the discord that one of the higher ups, quickly got on that.

Bin a massive fan of the SCP universe, and I thank you for creating this. I'd offer more help then a review but this is all I can think of for now.

First and foremost, I have very much enjoyed SCP THE TABLETOP RPG. The book itself is well written with, in my opinion, similar vibes to Cyberpunk 2020 in several respects (ie similar messaging on player-GM relationships but with less snark), which I consider a good thing.

What I normally look for in a TTRPG system is FAST character creation, dynamic combat being encouraged mechanically, and enough mechanical specificity to account for a wide range of shenanigans while not being dense to the point of simulation. I believe this game performs excellently on these fronts.

Character creation in SCP THE TTRPG is a unique version of a point-buy system; instead of having a pool of fixed, concrete numbers to distribute amongst the character's stats, there is a pool of dice (D8s and D10s) that are assigned to each primary attribute. The more traditional point-buying comes for the skills: for each "Knowledge", "Skill", or "Ability" a number of points may be assigned which are directly added to any appropriate skill check. You then select an "Appearence", "Body Type", and "Reasoning" (ie superstition level), each of which affects a handful of stats, and finally fill in the remaining substats based on the previous numbers. At first, charcter creation seems somewhat intense, but there are notes on the character sheet which help the player keep track of how to determine substats like HP and Movement Speed. After making one or two characters, the process makes a ton of sense and can be done very quickly! When it comes to equipment, there isn't much streamlining that can be done when it comes to physically writing down item stats, but there are "Loadouts" which the players can purchase with any starting money provided by the GM, which can set them up with all the equipment they need for a given role, meaning no need to comb through item lists figuring out to get.

Combat hits just the right balance of crunch and simplicity for me. There are 8 general types of actions you can take (attack, move, use item/reload, grapple, analyze [basically permanently boost initiative mid-combat], defend, reaction, and aim), some of which can be broken down more for specific rules (ie Melee v. Projectile attacks). While there may be a moderate number of rules to keep track of, they are very straightforward, and players are rewarded for thinking on their feet. For example, using the analyze action, a player could hit #1 in initiative order, which grants various bonuses during combat. Another might decide to move behind cover and take aim, so on the next turn they will be harder to hit (cover improves defense scores) and will have an easier time hitting an enemy (aiming increases to-hit). In addition to normal damage, it is possible for characters to trade a received critical hit for mutilations with various temporary or permanent effects that hamper their effectiveness. Decisions such as "Do I take cover and aim for accurate attacks or just spray from the hip for immediate attacks" and "Do I suffer critical damage or get a potentially permanent debuff" make for a more engaging system than the "stand in one spot and spam attacks" that certain games can fall into. One final note is that the combat is fairly lethal, with lots of dice being rolled per attack and big damage numbers. It's something I like, but may not be for everyone.

Interacting with the gameworld is not terribly complicated. There are a total of 65 skills governed by 8 overarching primary attributes that can be used to perform the various tasks of TTRPGs. Skills span from Cooking and Caretaking to Religion and Psychology, Stealth and Lockpicking to Demolitions and Driving, and everything in between. Beyond the skills, combat, and SCP-specific rules, there are few rules pertaining to interacting with the environment. Due to the fairly exhaustive nature of the skills and a few relevant items from the combat rules, a GM can determine fairly easily how to rule in a given scenario without needing to memorize or reference a large number of extra rules. Additionally, the rulebook is divided into various sections denoted by a "Security Level", which segment the book based on comlexity of rules (ie Level 0 is just the basic rules needed to play, then Level 1 adds extra rules for firearms; Level 2 explores rules regarding creating in game squads and the associated mechanics, and by Level 5 you have hit the GM info). There were even several instances where certain bits of rules are marked as [REDACTED] in earlier sections, and in later sections those portions are unredacted, with expansions on the associated rule. This can greatly help prevent new players and GMs from being overwhelmed and each section expands nicely upon the last.

TL;DR The SCP TTRPG is a system that is only moderate comlicated at worst and has a lot of really fun ideas and mechanics when it comes to character creation and combat.

TL;DR: Get the system, the price is a little steeper then some other systems but the product is top notch, a welll assembled game system with plenty of story focus, and some good crunch when it counts without drowning out the story just because dice are hitting the table. The Discord is active but not swarmed by people and freindly, and if you want an SCP represented, there are 20 in the book, more on the Discord, and the tools to convert any one you like to work mechanically with this system in a short time, or add in your own.

The SCP RPG has been a strong hit among my players, one group of which are not familiar at all with the SCP world or even its existence, and I have been playing as civilians being pushed into the world.

Stats, instead of being fixed numbers, are done instead by 'buying' dice into it, d8's, d10's, and d12's representing your abilitys, from barely capable of easy tasks, to the peak of human ability (and beyond?) as EXP is spent straight into the stats you want to buy up, when you want to buy them up, you have a much stronger control on how your character develops mechanically then most of the popular systems that rely on classes and the abilities tied to them for virtually all character progression. Combining this with the fact that most items that dont havee a direct mechanical effect, like medical kits and weapons, are left with no mechanical discussion, makes it clear the world is more to be played in and explored then bogged down by its mechanics alone.

Speaking of mechanics, the Proficiencies system (this games version of 'skills') is a very nice setup, breaking down the usual skills lists to three component sections, Knowledges holding almost exclusively the sort of skills that rely almost entirely on your mind, with little physical requirement behind them, while Skills are the more physical skills that rely on your own physical capability, with a couple of exceptions, but seeing as this is based around the SCP world where learning and containment is paramount, the Knowledge section is already larger then the others, so a couple shifted over skills is reasonable. Last is the Abilities, which in most cases are those less tangible abilities like Empathy, Leadership, and resisting the urge to die. These categories can be advanced in a couple of ways, some advanced by spending experience on upping the skill, instead of stat dice, for these more intangible factors, while others can be improved by dedicating in game time (and possibly resources) to training to sharpen your skills. Alongside the discussion on training is a clear notice to player and GM alike that too much training could allow the antagonists of the session or campaign unopposed time to push forward their own goals, encouraging players not to try to exploit training to make all their skills obscenely good.

Combat has a passive and active defence, which, if you choose too, you can get a very strong passive defense to reduce dice rolling, which actually feels encouraged as these defenses are boosted by Ability proficiencies, and passive defense is also the skill that allows characters to notice things in quick searches or in the moment, the traditional 'spot' check, for those versed in DND, making the skill very important for any character to improve quickly. Active defense, if the dice favor you, can be much higher, and this will often be necassary before long as most things beyond the regular human ability are quite capable of hitting you accurately, meaning the balance isnt completely skewed. Alongside defense comes attack, roll to hit the target, roll damage, so far time tested. However, there are also Damage Multipliers, based off those stats you have, namely the number of d10's and d12's you have, the dice that require more commitment to get. These allow more dice to be rolled to ensure much higher damage values even on low grade weapons, based off a physically capable character.

Combat has enough depth and crunch to satisfy, with things like weapon positions for ranged weapons based off how ready you are to fire, and Critical Hits determined by how well you beat the enemies defense, but it feels intuitive enough that you may only need to refer to the rules for it very occasionally, like when players decide its time to grapple. Mutilations can be chosen by the victims of a Crit as a way to take more severe Injuries in exchange for reduced or negated HP Damage, but this can backfire hard as many Injury categories (There are 8) have results like losing a limb or dying instantly, so this isnt a risk free strategy.

Equipment and Lore is sorted into Security Levels, a way for GM's to control their players so they dont bring a bunch of rocket launchers to their freind Urist the D-Class' barbeque on session one, and a way to manage what the characters would know about world lore like GOI's in an easy, intuitive way for the players.

The Director section contains a lot of helpful information, and is not padded out with a lot of pointless fluff like some systems rulebooks, and there is discussion on brewing up your own SCP anomalous creatures, or converting existing ones from the wiki into mechanically usable things for your game, a very nice addition that has already seen a lot of use on the Discord, which i would reccomend anyone considering buying, running, or playing this system should likely join, as it is not so active that you are drowned out, and the writer and various players are happy to answer questions and prvide ideas and information to help with the game.

The physical book is a quality product, as expected of DriveThruRPG's prints, but the art pieces are amazing quality and the font is a little larger then normal, so its more comfortable to read, and freindlier to anyone with vision trouble as well.
