OpenQuest 3rd Edition
Verlag: D101 Games
von Dave T. [Verifizierter Käufer]
Hinzugefügt am: 07/15/2022 01:38:16

OpenQuest 3 was a real treasure to find, especially as someone relatively new to d100 games/BRP family of systems. It presents one of the most perfectly and elegantly designed systems that makes a fantasy version of BRP ultra accessible, easy to understand, and completely intuitive to run. This is done while still retaining a ton of depth, many options to choose from for ways to apply mechanics, and fleshing everything out in a way that distills many concepts of Runequest and BRP Gold into it's essentials, but with tons of meat still on the bones for depth of play.

Particularly excellent is the layout! This 3rd edition makes OQ mechanics easy to locate, and very readable with page layout, font, and some nice artwork to spice things up in between. Other BRP / Runequest based systems I've found very difficult to navigate or font too small, but this is a masterclass in knowing how to use page-space properly in a way that relaxes the eye for ease of locating anything needed.

I really hope this system finds a big audience, as this type of d100 variation is sorely lacking for fantasy right now, and I was seriously impressed at the breadth but ease of understanding the ruleset contained within. If you want a simple, to the point written system that balances a rules-lite take with depth and robustness in terms of quality layout, giving fantastic examples that really make the rules come alive, and simplifying mechanics to still have heft, but just flat out make it easier to play and embrace narrative roleplay more...OpenQuest 3 is a seriously fantastic system.

Eberronicon: A Pocket Guide to the World
Verlag: Dungeon Masters Guild
von Dave T. [Verifizierter Käufer]
Hinzugefügt am: 07/15/2022 01:27:40

Eberronicon is a perfect product for what it sets out to do: take the sometimes overwhelming, lengthy (and INCREDIBLE!!!) lore of the Eberron setting, and make it entirely accessible for newcomers.

I'm someone very steeped in the lore of Eberron and own a good 5-6 sourcebooks for it, so personally I enjoy reading through times of lore for really interesting settings. But that's because 1. I'm a nerd 2. I GM the setting, so it's important for me to know the nuances and details so I have many options at my disposal. But this becomes a nightmare situation to introduce new players to Eberron who are either casually interested, or don't have the time or money to spend on immersing themselves in the rich lore books from the 3.5e, 4e, 5e D&D settings.

Enter Eberronicon, the perfect pocket size manual (about 55 pages) that is both welcoming to newcomers, extremely well written, ultra intuitive in both content and layout, and really nails a wonderful balance between presenting a ton of information, but doing so economically so newcomers can intake the setting well and have great information about it. Highly recommend in every way!

Ironsworn Lodestar (Reference Guide)
Verlag: Shawn Tomkin
von Dave T. [Verifizierter Käufer]
Hinzugefügt am: 07/04/2022 01:01:44

Ironsworn Lodestar, in my opinion, is the single most underrated resource & toolkit book I've picked up in the past 6-7 years of any TTRPG system. It's that fantastic, and I sincerely encourage anyone to check this out. The best part of it is, while obviously it is made as a supplement to use for Ironsworn, the enormous amount of GM guidance, random table generators, and worldbuilding tools can be applied to literally any TTRPG. If I had any two resources that can immediately be ported into any TTRPG setting, it would be Worlds Without Numbers, and Ironsworn Lodestar. Both are perfect.

Lodestar shines in that it gives tons of GM guidance for the specific PBtA (or PBtA adjacent/influence) Ironsworn game, and does a FANTASTIC job of presenting overview sections of all move types, categories and descriptions...that are well laid out, ultra intuitive to understand, and all locating in one easy to find doc. I honestly wish game designers made something this intuitive for every system, because more complex systems are dying for something like this, both for GM and player purposes, you can just flip it open and immediately find what you need for any Ironsworn game.

It equally shines as a generic/not tied to Ironsworn resource that is chalk full of random generators for everything from plot, worldbuilding, PC character building, character feelings and personalities, backstories, locations, villages, celebrations & disasters in villages or cities, random encounters, random events...all with tones stretching between happy to sad, to dark and spooky, to chivalrous, to joyful and celebratory to depressing or true danger or tragedy. It also has a fantastic section for name creation of both PCs, NPCs and creature types, as well as locations. Could be used for just about any system and setting that involves high or low fantasy, steampunk, or history.

It's just awesome, and for a resource so inexpensive, everyone should grab a copy. Kudos to the remarkably talented author Shawn Tompkin for creating Ironsworn, Starforged, and this excellent Lodestar resource!

Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures

This is an absolutely fantastic game, with a community that I very much hopes continues to grow with such rewarding material. This brings a wonderful co-collaborative mindset to the games, really stresses quality roleplay with actually building bonds and other dynamics into the game (for once), so the worldbuilding and character creation/backstory sessions are not only rich, detailed and enjoyable, but allow for a more immersive story where PC's have very real relationships with stakes and interesting hooks and plot devices. Absolutely love the mentality of not only this book but the other supplement books, they get everything right about OSR and TTRPGs in general. Highly recommended!

Fate Condensed

Absolutely love how easy Fate Condensed makes it to wrap your head around the system. As someone coming from more rules heavy systems, and greatly looking forward to more narrative based systems, as great as Fate Core was, Fate Condensed distills it all into a very easy to understand formatting, while updating the rules, and making it ultra presentable. Highly recommended, especially if you're a new GM and need to quickly get players to understand the system.
