The Essence of Fate

Fate Condensed is a compact, stand-alone version of the Fate Core System streamlined for clarity and ease of reference.

Fate Condensed gives you easy-to- digest rules in as few pages as possible, letting you get to the table and roll the dice, fast. It includes a few simple refinements to the Fate Core engine honed over a decade of active play and development. And best of all, it's 100% compatible with every one of our 90+ Fate products already published.

Fate veterans will appreciate the concise layout, minor refinements, and additions to Fate’s rules (see below for the details).

New to Fate? Fate Condensed can drive any game, any scenario you can imagine. Unleash your creativity! Fate's flexible rules make it easy.

You can adapt your favorite movie or tv series, or create an original world uniquely tailored to your group. Players populate that world with proactive, capable characters leading dramatic lives. The Game Master challenges them with crises tied both to the world and to their personal troubles.

Fate Condensed gives you the flexibility and power to bring your vision to life!

Refined. Streamlined.
Fate Condensed.

What’s new?

Inside Fate Condensed, you'll find:

  • One-point stress boxes to help reduce player confusion. (Don't worry, you can still use Fate Core stress if you want!)
  • Skills no longer determine turn order. Instead, the story determines who goes first, and the active player chooses who goes next.
  • We've improved advancement, eliminating significant milestones and finessing major milestones to compensate.
  • Active opposition is no longer separate from the defend action.
  • Fourteen pages of optional rules to make building your own custom variant of Fate easy. These options give you rules for countdowns, scale, extreme consequences, methods to make your Big Bads bigger and badder, and more.

Open Licensable.

For game creators, the text of Fate Condensed is available for development under an open license. Its low word-count means it won’t bust your budget when creating your own stand-alone game Powered by Fate. See https://www.faterpg.com/licensing/ for details.

Choose your Fate!

  • Looking for an in-depth walk-through of the system? Fate Core contains copious examples and under-the-hood design philosophy.
  • Want beginner-friendly, streamlined play? Check out Fate Accelerated, designed for speed.
  • Seeking a tight, refined, wallet-friendly rules reference? Put one (or more!) copies of Fate Condensed in easy reach, break out your dice, and start playing.

Whatever way you want to play, there’s a Fate that’s right for you!

The book's already been put into print, so at this point its content is static. The abbreviation we use at Evil Hat is FCon. "In My Sights" in both cases refers to an aspect; the aspect being on the target *is* the circumstance.

It seems like you're seeking a more detailed conversation about this than is easily covered in product comments; maybe hop over to the FateRPG community on reddit, or similar? It's not an update of Fate Accelerated. It's a condensation of Fate Core. The name's meant to be literal and descriptive and accurate. :)

This has probably been asked before, but I can't find it. Will Fate Condensed be released in ebook format (e.g., MOBI, EPUB) like other Fate rulebooks (and other EH materials)? (See https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse.php?filters=0_0_0_44502_0&manufacturers_id=2152&src=fid44502 .)

epub and mobi formats have not been financially worth the effort as they just don't sell; the few times we've done them, it's been because Kickstarter backers funded it as a stretch goal. Fate Condensed had no Kickstarter. So at present, there's no plan. That said the full text is available in open license, so there's nothing stopping someone else from taking its content and making epub/mobi.

The revision should be somewhere in the PDF and also the perhaps in the filename.

Do I have to re-checkout to get the latest or are the links under "You Have Purchased This Product" the latest?

Revision... 6, I think? Here's the changelog!

===

The overlap of terminology between Fate Core and Fate Condensed on advancement produced some confusion (as major milestones work differently in each). So for the purposes of clarity, we're renaming Condensed's "major milestone" to "breakthrough" and will remove "minor" from "minor milestone." This produces a few small ripples through the text.

Page 3, advancement bullet now reads "Advancement functions a little differently; we’ve eliminated significant milestones and finessed major ones (as breakthroughs) to compensate (page 39)."

page 38: On severe consequences bullet, major milestone -> breakthrough

page 39:
minor milestone -> milestone (multiple occurrences)

Condensed isn't an offer-every-option-ever-for-every-circumstance. I mean, Fate Core System isn't even that. Nor is it—nor any other Fate thing out there which might have a magic or psionics system in it that you'd like to adapt for your home game—inaccessible to you if you're using Fate Condensed as your starting point.

Just like Fate Core System, Fate Condensed is a starting point.

I'm not sure why this isn't obvious?

Well, I will try to explain. First take in consideration I have Attention Deficit Disorder.

I have the french translation of Fate Core and I have bought the Original Version.

I have understood while I was reading Fate Core that Extras was the mean to emulate mecha, magic, psionics etc.

I have found Fate Core to be extremely hard to read, Fae and Fate Condensed were easier to understood by comparison. I am just disapointed that mechanics which are important to the game like extras are only in the complicated book (for me anyway)

Aha! That explains much. Here's the thing, tho: Extras amount to "you can make all sorts of extensions to the system by treating anything like a character which can be constructed out of whatever parts you like: aspects, skills, stunts, stress tracks."

That's it. That whole chapter in Fate Core System is, largely, just giving examples of that core idea.

You don't HAVE to use Extras to do things like Magic and Psionics. That's just one way to do them. Let me give an example of another (light weight) way to do it (hopefully this helps):

You have an Aspect which somehow explains that you know magic. _MAYBE_ it's part of your High Concept: "Wizard of the High Realm" or something like that. Or maybe your GM will require you to use a specific Aspect for it (because maybe the cost of being Magical is that you have fewer other Aspects).

What that gives you is the justification for explaining _any_ of your actions as being magical in nature instead of mundane in nature. Without it, when you make an attack, you might have to justify it as "I throw a rock at him" (which means you need to have access to a rock). But with the Magic related Aspect, you can instead say "I shoot a mana bolt at him." The two attacks are resolved EXACTLY the same way, the Magic related Aspect just gives you a justification for different...See more

Revision 4 posted today. Here's the changelog.

============
Page 3

Added a bullet:
Create an Advantage has been tweaked to offer better clarity and agency around the discovery of existing unknown aspects (page XX).

Final bullet doesn't need to list specific options beyond full defense, especially given how the options chapter has expanded to approx 14 pages, so the language is compressed on the last bullet.

Now reads:
Full defense is presented as optional and has been altered a bit to accommodate the expanded scope of the defend action (page XX). Other standard rules options are presented as well, starting on page XX.
