Fate of Cthulhu
Verlag: Evil Hat Productions, LLC

Full disclosure, Fate is my go-to system and has been for quite a while now, so obviously, I'm inclined to like this book. But I really have to say, Fate of Cthulhu worked for me as a premise. The mix of Terminator and Cthulhu tropes are a good mix. My issue with a lot of Cthulhu systems has always been the idea that you cannot win, you fail/get corrupted/die inevitably, and you're just holding on, but this book takes a different path, balancing between hope and corruption. Players can have victories even if they, themselves, are destroyed in the process.

It's also important to know that the book doesn't sweep Lovecraft's racism and ableism under the rug. They're addressed right up front. The book explains why it does what it does and gives readers sources for inspiration that avoid the more problematic elements of Cthulhu mythos. As with a lot of Fate books, one of the strengths of this book is how much it can serve as a resource for games even outside of the immediate scope of the book.

If you've read the Fate Worlds books, the timelines in this book are about on par with those. They're pretty mix-and-match-able, though, so there's a lot of ability to throw curves at players.

It's totally possible that this book might not be someone else's flavor, but it really worked for me.

Thanks Keith! Glad you like the premise. Once the mash-up occurred to us it seemed like we really had to do something with it.

#iHunt: The RPG

I've said this in other places, but I want to leave a review here, too. I've played a lot of Fate games, I've run a lot of Fate games, I've written plenty of hacked material for Fate games; #iHunt is a great iteration of Fate rules. They're well explained here, in terms that should be familiar to even new players.

The book is an easy read, unlike many RPG books. It wears its heart on its sleeve, be it while giving a no-nonsense rundown of the poverty that drives people into the gig economy or while mocking the tried and true (and stilted) "here's how you make a character!" section of every RPG book ever. The layout is crisp, the colors are vivid, and the art fits the ad-copy style of the fictional app the game centers around. If a magazine, blog, twitter feed, and RPG book had a kid and that kid decided it wanted hunt monsters and punch fascists, this book would be that kid.

This game is easily in my top three iterations of Fate. I haven't run it yet, but it's going to have a solid chance at being my top iteration once I do.

The Short Games Digest: Volume 1
Verlag: Far Horizons Co-op

If you want games that you can just pick up and play, this has them. If you want creator owned content, right here. If you want gambling gods, monster teens, knight wooing, or multiversal dreamrealm protectors? Yup.

One of the great things about the this digest is that each game is bringing something completely different than the others, but none is so large that you can't just jump in and play with only a few minutes of setup. That means that groups looking for something quick can choose a game and start playing quickly, perfect for one shots, waiting for someone to show up, or just "let's try something new." I particularly enjoy Used Grimoires and Clerics poking at how the very serious presentations of certain classes and powers within RPGs often juxtapose with how players actually experiences them. Otherwise known as "for once, just stop throwing yourself down the dragon's freaking gullet, fighter!"

The Great Instrument is also deserving a shout out, because who wouldn't want to be a grand hero from a grander lineage working to reactivate the grandest mecha for a climactic battle to make the world a better place? That's cool stuff just waiting for cinematic moments. And, again, you can pick the digest up, grab a few supplies, and be playing quickly without the burden of mountains of prepwork sometimes inherent in roleplaying.

Favored Forms/Companion Sheet

In my OotA campaign each of the players have been running a PC so our DM doesn't have to control them all. In particular, I've recently picked up a Druid who specializes in two particular wildshapes. Because of that, this sheet is really handy for me. I can keep all her relevant data in one place without having to have a second full character sheet. The format is easy to follow and I felt like I had enough space to fit what I need to know. A really handy tool!

This supplement was worth every penny. Even just a handful of the archetypes here would have probably been worth the full price for me, and I got a lot beyond that! Everything is well-written and the bits I've tried have felt well balanced. The Runeguard is the archetype I've played around with the most and it is a blast! The combination of runes is fun and my decisions feel weighty. On top of that, the Runeguard definitely has its own distinct flavor. The Chaos Armor and Chaos Weapons are definitely fun DM tools for sowing a little anarchy. And that's without even touching on the adventure and new creatures! Awesome.

Aether Sea • A World of Adventure for Fate Core

I really love The Aether Sea. I've been a Patreon backer since the start of the campaign and this setting is well worth the price of admission (the others are great, too, but this is by far my favorite). John Alvarez Vita's art is basically perfectly themed to the setting, which is a theme of the Patreon worlds, and the setting is deep enough to open up quite a broad scope of stories. Personally, I'd lean back onto the Fate Core version of skills rather than Fate Accelerated's approaches, because I tend towards building characters who focus a little differently than the standard approaches and the Core version feels more flexible to me (but probably is probably truly equally flexible when compared to FAE's version). For the average game, either system would probably work just as well as the other.

As always, purchasing through DrviveThruRPG is great. The book looks great and the system is easy. I would really recommend joining the Patreon campaign, though! It's a great way to ensure that books like this keep coming (and they are at almost one a month!). The lower tier of sponsorship isn't super expensive, and this book--and the others!--is totally worth it.
