Dicey Tales

I buy a lot of pulp RPG's. A LOT!

Between careers and boons and flaws I can pretty much make up any pulp character I can think of. So far I have made your typical pulp adventurer, noirish private investigator, wild western gunslinger, a gentleman theif, and a low-level hero.

The system is simple yet elegant. I am not familiar with Barbarians of Lemuria, so I didnt know anything about this system before hand (after reading Dicey Tales, Ill definitely check it out), but its easy enough to understand and start playing.

The game has everything you could want to run a pulp game. Great character creation rules, an exciting and simple system for tasks and combat, a chapter on vehicle chases and even has a sample zppelin! Every pulp game needs a zeppelin. The book continues with rules for dangers you may come across when adventuring. Several pages of NPC's, enemies and creatures so you don't have to roll up your own when your in a hurry. Personally I can't wait for my players to fight a giant crab! Status for supernatural creatures are in the book too; Werecreatures, undead, vampires, etc.

Want some powers in your pulp game like The Shadow? This book's got you covered with a whole capter on powers and a little write up on creating your own.

The book ends with a fairly lengthy adventure.

If you love pulp you can't go wrong with Dicey Tales. I highly recommend it.

Hardboiled: Mystery, Mayhem, & the Macabre
Publisher: Fat Goblin Games

I have been looking for a hardboiled themed rpg for quite awhile. None of them really hit the mark. Hardboiled scratches that itch perfectly.

You can make any kind of character from hardboiled fiction or film noir. Although I would have liked to see a few more examples in the game, the rules are simple enough to grasp. The system does use playing cards, but there is an option to use dice, although you do lose some of the cool rules if you use the cards as written. The art is what I would expect if I picked up a pulp magazine and fits the tone of the book.

I'm looking forward to the POD as I prefer to have physical books instead of PDF. The PDF has links from the table of contents to the corresponding sections.

All in all if you are a fan of Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Mickey Spillane or any of the other hardboiled fiction writers, I think you will like this game.

Capers Rpg

I'm have never been of fan of systems that use playing cards over dice. Capers made me eat those words. The system is elegant, functional and easy to learn. It's simple but there is enough crunch. This is a game about gangsters with superpowers, not a supers game. All powers are low to mid-level. You aren't going to be able to make a Superman bootlegger. This easily became one of my favourite games that I produly display on the shelf.

Tiny Supers

Very sleek and simple system but still has enough details to make characters feel different. I get the same feeling from Tiny Supers as I did when I was playing running Marvel (FASERIP) and Marvel SAGA. That's high praise as they are two of my favourite rpgs.

I own A LOT of western rpgs, but this is my go to wild west game. It's simple and fun, but complex enough that you feel that there is substance to it.

Now if only there was a POD version :)
