"The mechanics are simple and straightforward, and really do link up very well with different dice systems. Orcery is fantastically creative and a really cool new thing for players to fiddle around with. The various tables, from Atmospheres to Situations to Lands to Folk, provide a ton of variety that you're going to have to work pretty hard to exhaust. "Electric Bastionland makes me want to play it, but that’s not all. Electric Bastionland also shows me how it should be run, providing more guidance and direction in its Conductor Resources than pretty much any other game I’ve read this year ... Electric Bastionland lavishes the bulk of its mechanical effort on the person running the game, and the result is that it’s just more accessible than the other games it gets compared to. Combine that with the meaty and evocative Failed Careers that players will readily be inspired by, and you have a winner. "Bluebeard’s Bride is not for the faint of heart, but for horror fans or people at least interested in exploring it I haven’t come across another game that works as well within that genre. The content is genuinely scary, the rules all work towards maintaining the right vibe, there is a surprising amount of room for creativity (even for a PbtA game) on both the side of the Groundskeeper and the Sisters, and even the basic ‘How to Play’ text is written to start making the shadows seem deeper. Even the look of the book (which is very nice even in PDF form) helps with this: there’s weird, echoey-looking text all over the place, blood drips from section dividers, the art is extremely well done, and important text is often an eerie blue."

"iHunt makes Fate work for horror ... the core mechanics that enable character competencies allow characters to get to where the horror is taking place, instead of letting them bypass it. I’d recommend this game to anyone interested in horror RPGs, not just because it’s good (it is), but because it’s modern. In a medium where Call of Cthulhu gets rehashed every Tuesday, we need a game based on dread from the 2020s instead of dread from the 1920s."

"If you want to really explore who a character is, so much so that even you the player are only really meeting them for the first time over the course of the campaign, in a world that manages to be different from what you’ll find in almost any other game, than you should be giving this one a try. Afterlife makes randomized character creation fun and interesting (I’d say even for the holdouts), has simple mechanics that even newcomers will find easy to pick up, possesses a slew of interesting abilities and impressive powers, explores a fascinating world and the worlds within it, and gives you plenty upon plenty of meaningful choices."

"OSR really isn’t my usual stomping ground, but FTD caught my interest with the 5e link and kept it by sticking to its guns. "Dust Bowl Galaxy is quick to pick up and learn, easy to play, brings something new to the dice, and for a book that’s only about 94 pages long packs in a ton of character. I quipped about Post-Apocalyptic!Firefly up above, and while I wouldn’t reduce the game to that quip the vibe behind it comes from a tone so wry you’d think it was a strong whiskey."

"I think the greatest thing [the adventure included in the book] shows off is its ‘Big Bad’, the human whose heart and mind the ngen must try to change in order to save the spring. The character isn’t just a sympathetic villain, she’s not even a villain in the first place: her secret motives would be recognized by most as, if not 100% selfless, morally good. She just doesn’t understand the threat to La Cascada and its ngen, who will vanish from the world forever if the project goes through. For prospective players and GMs wondering how complicated, challenging, and interesting the game could get, she is the perfect example."
