SCP The Tabletop RPG

This is some gold right here. As someone who's looked into other systems before but has only ever really played D&D 5th Edition, I found the rules very easy to learn, despite the present learning curve. The character sheet itself does look rather intimidating at first glance, but the book takes you through character creation in a very simple, very clear step-by-step process that breaks things down nicely without being too long-winded. I'm excited to bring this to my players and start our first game; I've been a fan of the SCP Community for a long time, so this book was a must-buy. However, even if you're not a major fan of the Foundation or its stories, I would argue that this RPG definitely deserves a spot on your shelf. It's rules system is fun, new, and engaging, and the ability for constant character evolution makes downtime something to look forward to.

I've bin reading threw it for the past couple days and I like what I see. I'm still learning cause this is a diffrent system then I am used to. I mainly just need to reread and make a cheat sheet. Once the charater sheet gets ported onto Roll20 (thanks covid). But I saw from the discord that one of the higher ups, quickly got on that.

Bin a massive fan of the SCP universe, and I thank you for creating this. I'd offer more help then a review but this is all I can think of for now.

SCP The Tabletop RPG

First and foremost, I have very much enjoyed SCP THE TABLETOP RPG. The book itself is well written with, in my opinion, similar vibes to Cyberpunk 2020 in several respects (ie similar messaging on player-GM relationships but with less snark), which I consider a good thing.

What I normally look for in a TTRPG system is FAST character creation, dynamic combat being encouraged mechanically, and enough mechanical specificity to account for a wide range of shenanigans while not being dense to the point of simulation. I believe this game performs excellently on these fronts.

Character creation in SCP THE TTRPG is a unique version of a point-buy system; instead of having a pool of fixed, concrete numbers to distribute amongst the character's stats, there is a pool of dice (D8s and D10s) that are assigned to each primary attribute. The more traditional point-buying comes for the skills: for each "Knowledge", "Skill", or "Ability" a number of points may be assigned which are directly added to any appropriate skill check. You then select an "Appearence", "Body Type", and "Reasoning" (ie superstition level), each of which affects a handful of stats, and finally fill in the remaining substats based on the previous numbers. At first, charcter creation seems somewhat intense, but there are notes on the character sheet which help the player keep track of how to determine substats like HP and Movement Speed. After making one or two characters, the process makes a ton of sense and can be done very quickly! When it comes to equipment, there isn't much streamlining that can be done when it comes to physically writing down item stats, but there are "Loadouts" which the players can purchase with any starting money provided by the GM, which can set them up with all the equipment they need for a given role, meaning no need to comb through item lists figuring out to get.

Combat hits just the right balance of crunch and simplicity for me. There are 8 general types of actions you can take (attack, move, use item/reload, grapple, analyze [basically permanently boost initiative mid-combat], defend, reaction, and aim), some of which can be broken down more for specific rules (ie Melee v. Projectile attacks). While there may be a moderate number of rules to keep track of, they are very straightforward, and players are rewarded for thinking on their feet. For example, using the analyze action, a player could hit #1 in initiative order, which grants various bonuses during combat. Another might decide to move behind cover and take aim, so on the next turn they will be harder to hit (cover improves defense scores) and will have an easier time hitting an enemy (aiming increases to-hit). In addition to normal damage, it is possible for characters to trade a received critical hit for mutilations with various temporary or permanent effects that hamper their effectiveness. Decisions such as "Do I take cover and aim for accurate attacks or just spray from the hip for immediate attacks" and "Do I suffer critical damage or get a potentially permanent debuff" make for a more engaging system than the "stand in one spot and spam attacks" that certain games can fall into. One final note is that the combat is fairly lethal, with lots of dice being rolled per attack and big damage numbers. It's something I like, but may not be for everyone.

Interacting with the gameworld is not terribly complicated. There are a total of 65 skills governed by 8 overarching primary attributes that can be used to perform the various tasks of TTRPGs. Skills span from Cooking and Caretaking to Religion and Psychology, Stealth and Lockpicking to Demolitions and Driving, and everything in between. Beyond the skills, combat, and SCP-specific rules, there are few rules pertaining to interacting with the environment. Due to the fairly exhaustive nature of the skills and a few relevant items from the combat rules, a GM can determine fairly easily how to rule in a given scenario without needing to memorize or reference a large number of extra rules. Additionally, the rulebook is divided into various sections denoted by a "Security Level", which segment the book based on comlexity of rules (ie Level 0 is just the basic rules needed to play, then Level 1 adds extra rules for firearms; Level 2 explores rules regarding creating in game squads and the associated mechanics, and by Level 5 you have hit the GM info). There were even several instances where certain bits of rules are marked as [REDACTED] in earlier sections, and in later sections those portions are unredacted, with expansions on the associated rule. This can greatly help prevent new players and GMs from being overwhelmed and each section expands nicely upon the last.

TL;DR The SCP TTRPG is a system that is only moderate comlicated at worst and has a lot of really fun ideas and mechanics when it comes to character creation and combat.

SCP The Tabletop RPG

TL;DR: Get the system, the price is a little steeper then some other systems but the product is top notch, a welll assembled game system with plenty of story focus, and some good crunch when it counts without drowning out the story just because dice are hitting the table. The Discord is active but not swarmed by people and freindly, and if you want an SCP represented, there are 20 in the book, more on the Discord, and the tools to convert any one you like to work mechanically with this system in a short time, or add in your own.

The SCP RPG has been a strong hit among my players, one group of which are not familiar at all with the SCP world or even its existence, and I have been playing as civilians being pushed into the world.

Stats, instead of being fixed numbers, are done instead by 'buying' dice into it, d8's, d10's, and d12's representing your abilitys, from barely capable of easy tasks, to the peak of human ability (and beyond?) as EXP is spent straight into the stats you want to buy up, when you want to buy them up, you have a much stronger control on how your character develops mechanically then most of the popular systems that rely on classes and the abilities tied to them for virtually all character progression. Combining this with the fact that most items that dont havee a direct mechanical effect, like medical kits and weapons, are left with no mechanical discussion, makes it clear the world is more to be played in and explored then bogged down by its mechanics alone.

Speaking of mechanics, the Proficiencies system (this games version of 'skills') is a very nice setup, breaking down the usual skills lists to three component sections, Knowledges holding almost exclusively the sort of skills that rely almost entirely on your mind, with little physical requirement behind them, while Skills are the more physical skills that rely on your own physical capability, with a couple of exceptions, but seeing as this is based around the SCP world where learning and containment is paramount, the Knowledge section is already larger then the others, so a couple shifted over skills is reasonable. Last is the Abilities, which in most cases are those less tangible abilities like Empathy, Leadership, and resisting the urge to die. These categories can be advanced in a couple of ways, some advanced by spending experience on upping the skill, instead of stat dice, for these more intangible factors, while others can be improved by dedicating in game time (and possibly resources) to training to sharpen your skills. Alongside the discussion on training is a clear notice to player and GM alike that too much training could allow the antagonists of the session or campaign unopposed time to push forward their own goals, encouraging players not to try to exploit training to make all their skills obscenely good.

Combat has a passive and active defence, which, if you choose too, you can get a very strong passive defense to reduce dice rolling, which actually feels encouraged as these defenses are boosted by Ability proficiencies, and passive defense is also the skill that allows characters to notice things in quick searches or in the moment, the traditional 'spot' check, for those versed in DND, making the skill very important for any character to improve quickly. Active defense, if the dice favor you, can be much higher, and this will often be necassary before long as most things beyond the regular human ability are quite capable of hitting you accurately, meaning the balance isnt completely skewed. Alongside defense comes attack, roll to hit the target, roll damage, so far time tested. However, there are also Damage Multipliers, based off those stats you have, namely the number of d10's and d12's you have, the dice that require more commitment to get. These allow more dice to be rolled to ensure much higher damage values even on low grade weapons, based off a physically capable character.

Combat has enough depth and crunch to satisfy, with things like weapon positions for ranged weapons based off how ready you are to fire, and Critical Hits determined by how well you beat the enemies defense, but it feels intuitive enough that you may only need to refer to the rules for it very occasionally, like when players decide its time to grapple. Mutilations can be chosen by the victims of a Crit as a way to take more severe Injuries in exchange for reduced or negated HP Damage, but this can backfire hard as many Injury categories (There are 8) have results like losing a limb or dying instantly, so this isnt a risk free strategy.

Equipment and Lore is sorted into Security Levels, a way for GM's to control their players so they dont bring a bunch of rocket launchers to their freind Urist the D-Class' barbeque on session one, and a way to manage what the characters would know about world lore like GOI's in an easy, intuitive way for the players.

The Director section contains a lot of helpful information, and is not padded out with a lot of pointless fluff like some systems rulebooks, and there is discussion on brewing up your own SCP anomalous creatures, or converting existing ones from the wiki into mechanically usable things for your game, a very nice addition that has already seen a lot of use on the Discord, which i would reccomend anyone considering buying, running, or playing this system should likely join, as it is not so active that you are drowned out, and the writer and various players are happy to answer questions and prvide ideas and information to help with the game.

The physical book is a quality product, as expected of DriveThruRPG's prints, but the art pieces are amazing quality and the font is a little larger then normal, so its more comfortable to read, and freindlier to anyone with vision trouble as well.

Absolutely great! I joined during the Kickstarter phase and loved it! The creators were great with providing updates and communicating through the community Discord, and that's not to talk about the content! The system is wonderful, and the book does a great job of listing out examples for characters and SCPs, and has great flavor text! I definitely recommend it!

I should've listened to the top review, I should've listened to my friends! 'Dont pitate PDFs', they said, 'Indie Tapletops need the money', 'it'll only cause you problems if you do'. What problems would it cause, I thought. They aren't going to sue or go after one random guy, I thought.

But being sued would be the least of my problems...

There are things out there in those woods, man, listen to me, there are things bigger than you or I, bigger than I-no-bigger than anyone can understand! I don't know if its because of the book or if it's becasue I stole it, I bought it thinking it would right my wrong-but the way...it...that thing, acted...what it did to me...I'm not sure...

It's quite an interesting system, with mechanics I quite like, suitably voilitle damage for the horror genre, a madness system that doesn't drive me mad with 'save or die, the gm can steal your character whenever they want' nonsense like you'd see in Call of Chtulu, rather it effects your skills and can be fixed for the most part. Other horror systems abandon the fact that you need hope in order for dread to mean something, while this actually gives you a chance to solve the supernatrual issue (depending on the gm of course, but it lends itself to that). I suggest you take a second read of every mechanic, it's a unique system that might have you going 'what, why?', but a second thought or a bit of play time will make you realize why the design descions are great for the horror genre.

(Also, I couldn't help myself but play along with the only other review here d; )

I gave this five stars, so it would stand out in hope that maybe you'll see it. This is my last attempt to contact you. I'm sorry I ever invited you to play this game. I'm sorry to everyone, but especially you. I didn't have a choice though.

I should have listened to the creator of this game and bought it from this site first. I think that's what must have happened to me and some of the others from the forums. The missing pages had some information about the game, and I guess they're needed to fully understand. I despise myself for not listening, but I thought this was just another tabletop game. I'm scared, and I'm all alone now. The forums aren't even there anymore. It's almost like they never even existed in the first place. The only one from our group that I've been able to find is Corey, but he won't talk to me. It's like he doesn't even remember me. I don't know what's going on. This game had so many reviews. Where did they all go? You can barely even find any information about it on Google. I messaged the creator over the Facebook page again, one of the few remaining pieces of proof that I'm not out of my mind. He told me never to message him again and blocked me. My account was banned. Facebook said my account was fake. What does that even mean? All of my pictures are gone. All if my posts and friends. Please respond to me. We NEED to finish the game. I think it's the only way.

~Ella

P.S. Don't make the same mistake I did. BUY THE BOOK FROM DRIVETHRURPG. I've received the complete version of the book, but I can't finish the game alone.
