Demon: The Descent Quickstart
von Tobias K. [Verifizierter Käufer] Hinzugefügt am: 11/08/2022 02:50:18

I really like the game line Demon The Descent, it offers amazing characteroptions and if you enjoy spy missions, a secret war, unreliable allies and a universe fighting you, this is a good game for you.

I have run this jumpstarter at least two times. It brings good advise, makes sure everything goes smoothly and actually can be played in one session, if you want to. As an European I had no idea why the last location would be choosen as the place for the final confrontation. After a google search I could see the visual appeal but yet. It took me quite some time to make the connection because on the surface absolutly nothing says techno angle revoloution in this place. We had fun, drama and at least one finale in which shit went down, tension was off the charts and powers clashed. 4/5 would rebell again!

They Came From Beyond the Grave!
von william g. [Verifizierter Käufer] Hinzugefügt am: 11/05/2022 23:13:06

This is the first game I have purchased in the "They Came From..." series. I will be buying the others in the series. There is no other game I have found that deals with this type of game. For some, this game may not work for stories they want to tell. If you are a fan of Hammer films and B-movies you will love this game. The Cinematics mechanic is great, you can do 4th wall breaks in a fun and often humorus way.

von Zachery N. [Verifizierter Käufer] Hinzugefügt am: 11/01/2022 21:21:10

Technology 2028 does a great job of setting the tone of what life is like in the Nova Age for Trinity Continuum: Aberrant. The author does a good job of advancing modern technology without going to futuristic. Most if not all of the items are usefull for Baseline characters in addition to Novas. These technologies do more than add more stuff for Players to use, they do a lot to aide StoryGuides on creating a near future world setting.

Yours to Keep: A Changeling: The Dreaming 20th Anniversary Edition Jumpstart
von Bob V. G. [Verifizierter Käufer] Hinzugefügt am: 10/28/2022 03:37:22

For the last few days, I have soloed my way through Yours to Keep: A Changeling: The Dreaming: 20th Anniversary Edition Jumpstart (44 pages, free at DriveThruRPG). I used Tourniquet: Solo rules for Vampire the Masquerade (same place) as the solo engine. I did use the four characters that are included in the RPG rules.

So, during the first scene the PCs are all together and they receive the mission: a “new” changeling came into the area and then disappeared. The PCs go to the beach/boardwalk/carnival area, describe the missing guy, and get some positive results. The PCs are pointed in the direction of a particular warehouse that can be seen from where they are at. What the PCs don’t know (and I am surprised to discover) is that this was actually an illusion. The PCs get to the warehouse, go in, and quickly notice that the guards are not carrying weapons. Erissa uses her high charisma and the conversation gets going. He was never there. The female guard closes her eyes, and then tells them that she can see him holding a small mirror and he is looking into it (yes, I was surprised again).

The PCs go back to the carnival and enter the mirror maze. In the middle of it, they are attacked by four temporarily-enchanted individuals. The PCs knock them out and find Joshua all tied up. He then tells them about the Unseelie causing problems. The group now heads toward the beach. On the beach, they are forced into another fight, this time with the Unseelie. The PCs win that one too, and move on towards their freehold. There they encounter more Unseelie and Erissa goes into diplomacy mode. She tells the Unseelie that they can have a portion of this beach town. They agree and leave the area. Actually, she is not authorized to do this, but this problem can be sorted out at another time. Give this interesting adventure a try! The solo engine was fun.

Scion: Masks of the Mythos
von Preston B. [Verifizierter Käufer] Hinzugefügt am: 10/24/2022 13:10:21

Okay, right off the bat I want to start by saying that this book is a 10/10 for me. It accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do and is, simply, sublime in its execution. That said, I also want to be clear that this book isn’t a “complete game” or anything. Masks of the Mythos is a sourcebook for Scion: Origin and Scion: Hero. The power level of this book is very much on par with hero level scions and while I haven’t done any head to head matchups dice pools are all pretty similar.

So, let’s do a quick rundown of my, personal, highlights:

  • The opening fiction “The Bog Woman” if wonderful, and hits all of the correct notes to get the headspace right to play this game. I have likely reread it a few time as I dove back into the sourcebook because of the feelings it evokes.
  • The chapter quotes may be the best Onyx Path has ever produced. They range from Neil Gaiman to Harriet Tubman to Neil deGrasse Tyson and every quote seems to exactly encapsulate the tone of Masks in a different way.
  • I am a fan of Lovecraft, but by no means an expert on the Mythos. That said, the principal members of the Mythos Pantheon all seem very well done. From Cthulhu to the King In Yellow they are all flavored well and those that I do recognize evoke the stories that I am aware of. Each member is thematically distinct as well from the others in a way that the Scions can all have interesting interactions if someone wanted to run a fully Mythos game.
  • The Mythos Birthrights serve as excellent inspiration, but I REALLY wanted more. I know that I have struggled with Relics in the past in games, and while the ones presented are fantastic, 2-3 more Relics and some more Birthrights in general would have been welcome.
  • Mythos fatebinding was presented in a very cool way. Honestly, I didn’t expect a separate fatebinding system, so this was one of the better surprises of the book.
  • The New Knacks are wonderful, but I don’t think I would have commented on them (because if you have read this far into this review you expected Knacks, but the sidebar on 47 is a VERY useful reminder about player agency and what knacks can and cannot do.)
  • There is a picture on page 58 that I just loved. The artist utterly nails this look of shock.
  • The antagonists section is well done and the fact that they go all in on beings like Father Dagon is a wonderful touch that likely won’t see much play, but gives storytellers a great jumping off point for similar creations.
  • Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the first appendix. The authors saw fit to give is a full 15 pages of information on how to translate Masks up to Demigod tier play. This gives this book a lot of value for some groups and will allow for MANY more groups to gain inspiration from the materials within.

If you are even the least bit interested in adding some terror from beyond the stars to your game, by this book. It is absolutely worth it and will continue to add value to your game for session after session.

Trinity Continuum: Aberrant - Black Null
von Christopher W. [Verifizierter Käufer] Hinzugefügt am: 10/20/2022 04:04:52

If you're looking to add more oomph to your Teragen games, Black Null is indispensable. It calls back to first edition Aberrant's fantastic Teragen material and pulls some of it forward without being a retread. The paths and edges included really expand on what's provided in the core Trinity Continuum: Aberrant book for Teragen characters, but the inclusion of new quick nova creation archetypes was a fantastic inclusion, and is one that I'd love to see other Aberrant releases follow up on, community content or otherwise.

Beyond Electric Dreams
von Christopher W. [Verifizierter Käufer] Hinzugefügt am: 10/20/2022 03:39:02

Beyond Electric Dreams is the best kind of community content: the sort that drills down into the really interesting, yet hyper-specific parts of a setting that even sprawling game lines full of big, glorious core books and nigh-endless official supplements struggle to make room for. If you're planning to run a youth-oriented game in Trinity Continuum: Æon, this is an obvious must-have, but it's also a fantastic addition for anyone who's just looking to make their Æon game feel more detailed and lived in. My first thought after cracking it open was "Damn, I wish I'd had this before I started my game," and every section after only reinforced that feeling.

C20 Kithbook: Boggans
von Rebekah T. [Verifizierter Käufer] Hinzugefügt am: 10/19/2022 08:54:24

Such a cute book. Made me way more interested to play boggans after reading! Knowing that the boggans are known, for instance, as the champions of the down trodden (fighting for equal rights, abolition, unionization, etc.) really gave me a different perspective on them. Heroes of the servants, patrons of the crafters, Kithbook: Boggans gives a quiet nobility and honor to the boggans that's missing from their quick entry in the core rulebook. I especially like the explanations as to how an unseelie boggan would act, since boggan is one of those kith that it's hard to believe would ever be selfish or chaotic. Truly a great entry.

Songs of the Sun and Moon: Tales of the Changing Breeds Anthology
von Björn L. [Verifizierter Käufer] Hinzugefügt am: 10/17/2022 11:00:44

There is more than the Garou - a Mephisto review

Songs of the Sun and Moon

The subtitle Tales of the Changing Breeds already shows that this anthology book for Werewolf W20 does not focus on the Garou, but on the Fera - the other were-beings besides the werewolves. So at one point, the reader accompanies the unusual team of Ajaba and Ratkin to Malfeas. Then an archeologist is confronted with Bastet and Ghural or an Ananasi has to master an intrigue in London.

To do justice to the number of different Fera, most of the short stories take on several types at once. The stories are entertaining and illustrate the alliances and rivalries among Gaia's children, while the stereotypical fight against the Wyrm plays only a limited role here. Yet, the seven stories are varied – from the horror of a confrontation with the Rokea to an archaeological exploration adventure to a story of self-discovery – and yes, there is an attack on a Wyrm base. I particularly enjoyed The Sins of Sharks and Threads of Steel and Glass, but this anthology as a whole provides some entertaining reading material.

Exalted: Tales From the Age of Sorrows
von Ellen S. [Verifizierter Käufer] Hinzugefügt am: 10/05/2022 11:54:12

For $3 I don't regret buying this book, but overall it needed much, much better editing and creative control. Typos abound. Multiple authors forgot some character’s name and changed it randomly mid-story. Many stories are drastically out of step with the Exalted setting, which is not what I want from tie-in fiction. Almost every story has multiple errors, which always jar me out of the fiction. 1/5 for the editing. However I did enjoy some of them. If you only want stories loosely inspired by Exalted, you may like it more.

Credits: Richard Dansky actually wrote the Trilogy of the Second Age. There's no Trilogy of the Third Age.

Maiden’s Kiss (4/5) - A good story, a look at mortals interacting with magical beings who can casually turn their lives around. But the gold coins are weird and out of place in Creation.

Bronze and Bisque (4.25/5) - A mostly good, believable Solar story focused on character development, with a side of action. Not amazing, but has very few typos and no setting errors. The Solars are unusually knowledgeable about their Exaltation, though.

The Circle Will Be Broken (2.5/5) - A mostly decent, non-faction Sidereal story and mostly plausible within the setting IMO – including the bizarre black flag and the bureaucracy. But when the Imperial City is under attack, why hasn't even a single Dragon-Blood showed up to defend their capital?? This is why Sidereals manipulate the Dragon-Blooded, so they don't have to do these dangerous missions themselves. I also had a hard time following the witty reparte dialogue because these characters all have quite similar names and no descriptions.

Death of a Solar (3/5) - Has lots of little departures from the setting that added up to breaking me out of the story. The Wyld Hunt describe a known Solar as a criminal who broke a law instead of a soul-eating demon (but we never learn what law). The word Anathema is never uttered. It takes place in an anachronistic coal-mining town. The Solar goes years without spending a single mote of Essence, not even reflexively or by accident, even though anyone who could be willing to live like that could never Exalt in the first place; this is a theme of the setting. Despite serious flaws, the underlying plot is a good concept.

Exalted Among Us (4/5) - It’s not actually bad but somehow rubbed me the wrong way. Personally I prefer sympathetic protagonists. The author named a small town after a major city 1770 miles away, but perhaps wasn't told where Zoatham is. Rice and ships (not sandships) are apparently common in the desert. The main character oddly credits Exaltation to the gods and stars instead of the Dragons, but then he's kinda weird.

Secrets in My Waters Still (5/5) - An odd tale, it feels very original to me. I’m not quite sure what the protagonist is, but it's believable and doesn’t feel out of place in the setting like most of the other short stories. This tale also has fewer typos than most. It's an excellent example of innovation and weirdness without trashing the setting.

What You Do Not Understand (4/5) - A good, interesting story except for the typos. It's an unusual use of second person narration, but it works well. It depicts encounters with the gods from a mortal perspective, but confusingly refers to the goddess Shalrina as Exalted.

When the Moon is Dark (2/5) - I was warned not to read this story in which a Dragon-Blood nonsensically becomes a Solar and falls in love with the Lunar she was Wyld Hunting. She never suspects what happened despite ample evidence, perhaps because it violates the most basic parts of canon. These two types of Exalted are designed and written for quite different mythic archetypes. That's not the only problem – caste marks are on chests instead of heads and the Wyld Hunters never once recogize the marks they're trained to look for, but also ignore all their training to believe Lunars are Exalted. The DB Dynast has implausibly little training and experience (like, none). Weirdly helpless DBs are as easily captured as mortals. Lunars lose their powers on the new moon. On the other hand, the quality of the writing itself is actually very good. If this wasn’t supposed to be about Exalted, it could have been genuinely good.

For Love of Heaven (3/5) - In some ways this is a good story, describing a complex sorcerous working in rather interesting detail ... but what is going on? Is Fidelis a Lunar? He’s several hundred years old and his entire life is obsessed with finding his Solar ?Mate? (which would paint Lunars as mopey sidekicks instead of independent heroes). He’s clearly an advanced sorcerer but he has no Charms, can’t shapeshift, and can’t even use his sorcery when in danger. So he’s actually mortal? Also, several terms used incorrectly kept jarring me out of the story.

The Herald of Glorious Death (2.5/5) - Warning: mutilation & lots of gore. A quite thematic Abyssal story about why the Exalted can’t just solve every problem with violence. If not for the excessive gory details it could have been good, merely not to my taste. But the author also decided to misuse nonbinary gender identity as a shorthand for eeeeeevul perversion – derogatory and completely unnecessarily since the plot already revolves around human sacrifice and cruelty. Abyssals are also shapeshifters like Lunars, solely to make them nonbinary. If you don’t like Abyssals or splatter horror, it’s not worth reading.

A Resting Place at the Heart of the Mountain (2/5) - Very inconsistent with the setting, and the plot makes no sense. The hated mortal Regent Fokuf nonsensically becomes “Emperor” and sends an incompetent mortal “Cathak Creos of House Iselsi” on a mission that required an experienced Exalt. Anyone who knows Exalted knows nobody could belong to two Great Houses and nobody would admit to being an Iselsi. Cathak Creos is also named Rhey, switching names about every 2nd paragraph. Maybe he’s also an Outcaste raised by peasants because he doesn’t know the basic rules of courtly manners all Dynasts are trained in. “The Hundred Kingdoms seethe with revolt” against an empire that never ruled them in the first place. I could go on.

The Kingdom of Honey (4.5/5) - This is very well-written with evocative language, fewer typos than most, and quite an interesting plot and character. It would be 5/5 if it didn’t break the rules of Solar Exaltation. The protagonist would make more sense as a Sidereal or god-blood daughter of the Bee Empress. I would like to see a sequel; perhaps that would provide an explanation for the protagonist’s unusual destiny at birth to become a Solar?

A Singular Justice (0/5) - I was warned away but read a few paragraphs out of morbid curiosity. The author has less understanding of the setting than one could learn from TV Tropes. This “First Age” story is actually set in some D&D world, where dozens of “Solar Exalted” Journeyman D&D wizards all attend not!Hogwarts. Despite the god-king students (who should be extremely wealthy), the school is explicitly broke and treats them like lowly apprentices. “Adventurers” come and go just like in D&D. Someone beats up Cathak Creos, who is already a character in another short story (see above). The Empress is mentioned so it might be the Second Age, when the Solars definitely don’t exist in such enormous numbers, let alone all in one place living openly as Solars! If it's the Second Age why are there so many books of sorcery and why haven't several dozen Wyld Hunts and Imperial Legions attacked this Anathema school?? The author even misunderstands caste marks.

Mage: The Ascension 20th Anniversary Edition
von Vincent L. [Verifizierter Käufer] Hinzugefügt am: 10/05/2022 09:54:39

I got this book mostly because of nostalgia. I have very fond memories of the short time i spent playing Mage. I give this one star for several reasons.

Firstly, the book as recieved from DriveThruRPG is very expensive for the quality. I believe it is print on demand? This book cost me £137 , the paper is rough and the colour isn't brilliantly done. The binding looks cheap.

In direct contrast I paid £124 for a deluxe set of Call of Cthulu books (both main rulebooks, a GM screem, maps etc) in a hard slipcase. These are all glossy books, with excellent strong pages and great colour.

Besides the quality of the physical book, the layout and information in this is just a mess. Most of it is interesting, and i LOVE the idea of the system...but this is incredibly difficult to figure out how to actually play the game from the book itself. Various rules and even elements of character creation are scattered throughout the massive tome, with no real way to find them. Comapred to all the various other RPG rulebooks i have in my collection this is one of the worst overall.
