FIST: Ultra Edition
by Khanh [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/22/2024 10:13:06

The game is an OSR masterclass. It delivers a hyperfocused genre piece that is easy to pick up and play. It has simple rules and numerous player options to create the corny retro tone of its action movie inspirations.

Low HP, high damage for deadly combat. A simple attribute check system to resolve problems and keep up the pace. Players are required to think outside the box of their character sheet and creatively overcome their quipping adversaries. Consequences are real and punishing. PCs die the moment they reach 0 HP, but the rules allow players to rapidly reinsert themselves with a back up character.

Would absolutely recommend.

FIST: Ultra Edition

"I don’t have a view of FIST pre ULTRA EDITION, but having read UE it’s hard to picture it without the vast swathe of material provided. As is, I think FIST: ULTRA EDITION manages to do something of particular use: it’s the perfect one shot game, and yet it offers a depth of content and character growth that could see a campaign go for the long haul." - Seamus Conneely. FIST: Ultra Edition

Short version: It does what it says on the blurb very well. It's five bucks and less than twenty pages. Pick it up, you won't regret it.

Longer, more unneccessary version: If you want a quick, very light, gonzo, open action movie game this might be the holy grail for you. Perfect for something like Metal Gear Solid, Doom... Or pretty much anything modern, high tech and paranormal. Want to be a cyborg ninja? Done. Want to be a strange sniper who controls bees? Go ahead! Some failed government experiment who's unlocked the power of LSD and talks to animals? The game supports that too. The setting is about mercenaries taking on weird cases in the cold war era, but it's easy to expand towards more modern times if you want to.

If you want to know more about the crunchier side of the mechanics: Character creation will take about ten minutes at most. You pick two traits. You note what abilities, pieces of equipment and stats adjustments those traits provide. Then you pick a role which outlines what motivates you character and how your character "levels up". Done.

Gameplay is equally light and breezy. If you've ever played a Powered by the Apocalypse game you'll be on very familiar grounds. The GM describes the world and plays the role of the NPC's, the players play their characters, same as in most tabletop RPG's. What's different is that combat isn't it's separate mini-game, the whole play is a back and forth conversation between players and GM's where players roll the dice when they do something risky. It will be a bit confusing at first if you are used to more "tactical" games but once you mentally switch gears it can be fast, fun and surprisingly flavorful as the players spend more time describing their player's actions than try to maximise their character's abilities.

My group loved it, quickly got into the groove of things and were surprisingly invested in the characters and story. I very highly recommend it. Besides, what do you have to lose at five bucks?
