Village on the Borderlands 1E

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Hamlet of Taldren has been a peaceful settlement for many years, however dark times have fallen upon its denizens. Roving bands of Ogres have been raiding the stockpiles and animal pens in the night! It is believed they answer to a rambunctious giant living in a nearby lush green valley known as the Hill Giant Highlands. There have also been reports of strange animated fungi plant monsters appearing in the Caverns of the Wicked Peaks. Folks have even spotted bandits lurking around the ruins of Sternholm Keep and wandering skeletons in the old cemetary in the Forest of the Fallen Oaks. The villagers have cobbled together a ragtag group of willing adventurers to put an end to these dastardly fiends wherever they spawn. Fame, fortune and glory await those brave souls who can defeat these evil monsters and restore order to the Village on the Borderlands!

This is a 64 page PDF RPG Module for Levels 1-3 AD&D 1E (FIRST EDITION), OSRIC or OSR role-playing games. This module is designed for using 4-8 characters of levels 1 to 3. The party should consist of Fighters, Clerics, Magic Users, and a couple of Thieves, but you are free to figure out what works best for you and your group.

It is a sandbox style adventure complete with the full Hamlet of Taldren setting with over 100 named NPCs (with a two page chart so you can easily locate their locations), 45+ shops, homes and farmhouses, a full featured multi-level tavern / inn called the "Whistling Pig" with about 25 encounter areas and the surrounding Valley of the Moon location. There are FOUR complete MINI-ADVENTURES there for the PCs to explore: Ruins of Sternholm Keep, Hill Giant Highlands, Forest of the Fallen Oaks and the Caverns of the Wicked Peaks. Each location provides a complete adventure, goal and boss monster to defeat and can be played in ANY order!

Maximum Mayhem Dungeons have that classic look and feel, including old school maps, removable covers and fantasy art from some of the best artists in the business! Filled with diabolical villains, irreverent characters, over-the-top monster encounters, outrageous magic, mischievous NPCs, traps, puzzles and more, this adventure will entertain and challenge everyone who dares to play it!

Included in this project is:

- A PDF of the 64 Page 1E (First Edition AD&D Style) Village on the Borderlands module
- A PDF of 8 Pre-Generated 1E Characters Levels 1-3 on "Ghost Tower" style sheets
- A PDF of the Hamlet of Taldren in BLUE STYLE and FULL COLOR style!
- A PDF of the full color map of the Valley of the Moon
- A PDF (24 Pages FULL COLOR) of Recipes from the Inn of the Whistling Pig which contains 16 real-world recipes that you can cook yourself!

An example of a 1E encounter in the village (the 5E book and PDF have 5E stats). The title tells the GM up front of what the place is. The boxed text describes the OUTSIDE of the location. The GMs text tells us WHO is in there with stats. The unquoted bolded text is worded so it can be read aloud to the Players describing the interior of the place. Next is what they NPC knows and the treasure they own.

In order to make it easier for the GM and PCs to find the over 100 named NPCs in this 64 page module, I created the two-page table:

Here are some of the incredible artworks from the Village on the Borderlands module:

The notorious former thief named Warwick Diamondfingers has discovered a cursed sword  called "Illumina mi Nemesi" in the Ruins of Sternholm Keep! Now he thinks he is a knight and is corrupted by the weapon, taking out his own men one by one and growing more evil daily! Can your PCs stop him? Probably not... but they can certainly die trying! Artwork by Jeff Dee!

I always wanted to make a "burst" picture on the title and credits page of the module! A tribute to Expedition to the Barrier Peaks! Art by Felipe Faria!

The "Inn of the Whistling Pig" is a lively and fun place. You can see me as the dashing and handsome (lol) swashbuckler NPC known as "Marcus Lafitte" and "Merlin" my black cat as a cameo in this beautiful two page centerfold! Art by Felipe Faria!

The Innkeeper is Brunhilde Helga Olsen, aka "Broom Helga" a stout retired female warrior. Your PCs can end up in a headlock exactly like this in one of two ways, either skipping out without paying the tab or if she "takes a fancy" to them they will end up with red wine lipstick kisses on their cheeks! Art by Jacob Blackmon!

The fortune teller has a mission for you to find the ghost child "Luna" who wanders around in the cemetery and deliver a black rose to her grave after killing the evil Shambling Mound that has taken over the Forest of the Fallen Oaks! Art by Mark Lyons!

My mother just passed away recently at the age of 91 in Jan of 2023 and my father back in 1997 at the age of 73 so I decided to put them in the book as a tribute. My dad was an architect and mom a realtor so I made them the NPCs Howard the carpenter and Ann his wife! Art by Jacob Blackmon!

The lonely old druid Hermit Brother Tiberius with bad cataracts is so happy that you joined him for some nice hot Elvenberry Tea and a smoke, he's going to honor his esteemed guest by lighting your pipe on fire... or maybe something else! Artwork by Jacob Blackmon

Hmmm...  a couple of old kayaks in a cavern pool with a choice of two dark tunnels to paddle down. One probably leads to a horrible, quick death and the other probably leads to an even more horrible and quicker death? Artwork by Jacob Blackmon

The local Hill Giant boss Chief Harold Grumblebutt has been leading the ogre raids on the village, however his other "giant bosses" involved in the larger incursion have been getting frustrated with him slacking off. You see, he is more interested in completing his "trophy head" collection and has been distracted by this folly, trying to find "perfect adventurers" head! Will it be one of the PCs in your group? Judging by the Chief's "eye for beauty and perfection" it probably be the ugliest PC with a 3 Charisma! Artwork by Felipe Faria!

The villagers follow a druidic religion called the "Order of the Sun" worshipping the heavens and stars. If you are lucky you could get invited to a party on the Hill of the Standing Stones! Or you could loot all of their homes and shops while they are whooping it up! Artwork by Felipe Faria!

The PCs must enter the Forest of the Fallen Oaks and kill a Shambling Mound named Slaggariah who has taken it over with his evil creatures. Don't be scared of Luna the flickering ghost child who roams the cemetery looking for brave adventurers to destroy the creature and put a black rose on her tomb to free her spirit and restore the forest to its normal and beautiful state.

This is Linzabar, a wicked Drow Magic-User / Wizard who has been living in the Caverns of the Wicked Peaks perfecting his "Honeyspot" mushrooms (black caps with yellow spots) which when eaten by an unsuspecting person will allow their mind to be controlled for 24 hours or more! This is another bastard that must be stopped before he spreads more of them around the village! Who knows WHO can be trusted there? Artwork by Jacob Blackmon

Just picked this up, and noticed that the text on page 22 gets cut off.

"There is a loose stone in the center of the chimney which hides a secret compartment holding: (1) Potion of Greater Healing, 305 cp, 76 ep, 55 gp and a piece"

Piece of what, pray tell?

Are there any plans for a future adventure dealing with the three giant kings mentioned on p.36? I could just use the Against the Giants trilogy (which I guess is the intent), but wondered if you were planning to put your own unique spin on those classic modules.

I am currently running this for my Elder Scrolls themed game using Pathfinder 1e rules after the Kickstarter campaign finished. So far it has been fun, and the design is typical old school OSR goodness that I have come to expect. I will say there is still some typos and proofreading that needs to be done with this as it feels rushed with no correction. Certain dialogue makes no sense or sounds like gibberish. Some spots, in regards to tone, feel somewhat childish which breaks the immersion, and the jokes or real world references feel too forced. The amount of treasure given out is somewhat over bloated, and yes I understand the need for this being a 1e module which system used gold to level in place of experience, but still there are small caches ranging from several thousand platinum pieces to 100k in gold, just from one encounter! I would recommend to tone this back some. Also the map layout lacks the feel of logical immersion as all four main quests are relatively close by to the main starting village...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
