Want to try before you buy? The Fantasy AGE Quickstart is available now!

Leap into sword & sorcery RPG adventures with the Fantasy AGE Core Rulebook! Powered by the popular Adventure Game Engine, Fantasy AGE 2nd Edition is easy to learn, fun to play, and welcoming to new roleplayers. The Fantasy AGE Core Rulebook includes these features:

  • Simple Character Creation: Pick an ancestry (such as draak, dwarf, goblin, and wildfolk), pick a class (envoy, mage, rogue, or warrior), pick a specialization (such as duelist, diplomat, pirate, and sword mage), and jump into the action.
  • Heroic Stunts: The heart of the game is the stunt system, which brings dynamism and drama to the table. Roll doubles on 3d6 to pull off unexpected moves in combat, cast more potent spells, perform amazing feats of physical and mental prowess, or even cut a rival down to size with a few clever words.
  • Mighty Magic: Spell casters learn arcana, which are themed groups of spells. Mixing and matching the 19 arcana gives the mage class a huge amount of flexibility. To get started, choose two arcana like Beast, Cold, Death, Earth, Fate, Fire, Healing, Protection, Mind, and Shadow.
  • Game Master Guidance: If you are new to RPGs or have never GMed before, the Core Rulebook breaks it all down for you. Not just GM advice but practicalities as well. There’s guidance for each of the GM’s four roles: Game Planner, Game Host, Game Runner, and Game Moderator.
  • Customizable Rules: The GM can use optional rules for the campaign to better reflect the setting. Choices include the twin systems of Peril and Daring, which allow for dramatic swings from disadvantage to advantage as the tension builds. Horror rules can give the campaign a sinister turn. The Fortune system is an alternate way to handle health and damage first introduced in The Expanse RPG.
  • The Stranger Shores: The Core Rulebook introduces a campaign setting of its own called Stranger Shores. Brave the Deeps, which have been the doom of many a ship. Sail with a Mystic Navigator to travel to distant lands.
  • Breakwater Bay: Enter the Stranger Shores with Breakwater Bay, a starting adventure area to kick off your campaign. The book includes Set Sails for Breakwater Bay, a complete adventure.
  • So Much More: You’ll also find character talents, challenging monsters, chase rules, magic items, relationships and bonds, and more. This is the complete package.
  • Part of the Family: Green Ronin publishes other RPGs powered by the Adventure Game Engine: The Expanse, Modern AGE, Blue Rose, Cthulhu Awakens, and Fifth Season. If you’ve played any AGE games, you already know the core of the system. Veteran gamers will be pleased to hear that Fantasy AGE 2nd Edition is largely compatible with all previous Fantasy AGE releases.

Swords, sorcery, stunts, and Stranger Shores—the Fantasy AGE Core Rulebook is your portal to exciting new RPG adventures!

Does the core book contain the fantasy age companion material? Why is there no POD option?

I frankly love the AGE system, it's simple, allows for some fairly unique concepts and the like, but the one issue I always had with 1st edition was the lack of any real way to separate Faith-based magic from Arcane Magic, due to the system's basis in the Dragon Age RPG. And considering that my homebrew Multiverse kinda heavily features Divine beings, and that separation of magic is very much a thing, I never really got to use it as much as I would have liked.

Is the 2nd edition more open to the idea of there being a separation between Arcane and Divine Magic?

Yes there is a whole (small) section on making Divine a separate kind of magic, including how that would (could) affect various class specializations

How compatible is Fantasy Age 1st Ed going to be with this? I was looking for a system to start a new campaign and my Fantasy Age 1e stuff was on the shortlist, but I don't know if proceeding with that would be a good call if a new version (in print form) is imminent. Speaking of printed copies, is there a release date for the print edition?

2e Core essentially replaces the Basic Rulebook and Fantasy Age companion. Bestiary, Lairs, etc.. are still fully compatible

I'm hesitant to buy this new edition since I'm playing exclusively on VTT and I'm still waiting for a compendium for the Expanse RPG rulebook on Foundry VTT or roll20. Any plan to publish official rules content on one of these platform? Thanks.

Jonesy here, yes, we are actively working on the Roll20 compendium for Cthulhu Awakens (was part of a Kickstarter so its first), and The Expanse for Foundry is nearing the finish line.

Are there rules for making magic items and new spells? In a fantasy setting it seems odd, in 1st addition’ to have say 7 or so spells per arcana and that’s it. If magic was possible amd spells could be created it seems like there would be a host of spells to do so many little things.

Dragon AGE has always been "sort of" compatible because of the different stats.* Comparing the other game lines, the other AGE games were compatible using a wrench, while Dragon AGE was only compatible using a hammer.

I love the Dragon AGE magic system. Between the Fantasy AGE 2 and Dragon AGE game systems, the two Mage classes are pretty much compatible. It wouldn't be difficult to simply port over the DA magic system and specializations and use them nearly as is (just convert the dual-purpose Magic ability score to use FA's Intelligence ability for casting rolls and substitute Willpower for Spellpower). Here is the link for Green Ronin's discussion on the differences between the two games:

First impression is excellent.

Negatives first: I don't care very much for the art (standard cheesy high fantasy) or the layout (the layout team really should have paid more attention to how box text is disrupting flow of the main text).

Positives: The writing (clear and grammatically very tight). The system (first impression, mind you, but the system seems to walk the line very nicely between easy play and interesting options). I have limited time and this game is top 3 for my next attempt.

On the positive, regarding layout, I'd like to say that it is nice to see that so many of the subjects are fully contained within the pages. For instance, each class fills out two pages (nice to print out each class on one sheet of paper--front and back--to hand out to players) without seeing the next class intruding. For instance, you could print out the entire Equipment chapter (16 pages), from start to finish, and put it into a duo-tang or binder, and let players reference it without having to borrow the core print book. Backgrounds... same. Ancestries... same. Basic rules (28 pages)... same. Focuses/Talents/Specialization (28 pages)... same. Magic (36 pages)... same. Nothing overlaps in these examples. This full compartmentalization of subject matter is elegant.

I was wondering that the canine wildfolk are the only one without a natural weapon. If I play a dog I want use the big teeths somehow.

I notice on p 5 you use "he or she" in reference to the GM. Did you mean to use "they"?

He or she is the more grammatically correct way of phrasing it.

Not necessarily; classic writers have even used the singular "they." It's become a more readily accepted option regardless of whether it's used to shorten word count or signal support for transgender communities.

Pretty bad slip of the key if you type "he or she" meaning to type "they". More likely the writer wrote exactly what he or she intended.

I believe that both are technically correct. The singular they has traditionally been used to refer to people of unknown gender, so using it here would have a lot more precedent than using it to refer to a non-binary person, but it's definitely not the only option.

I checked on my iPad and can see preview links for Fantasy AGE, Blue Rose, and the M&M Deluxe rulebook. The way product listings show up on my Android phone, none of the preview links appear for Green Ronin. I gave Modiphius products a scan because I knew they have previews, but those don't show up on my phone either.

I think this is something on the DTRPG side.

Will Green Ronin provide a more compressed version of the PDF file for easier reading on tablets with for example GoodReader? Right now, the file is awfully big and each page takes a couple of seconds to render.

Quick question concerning mages: this sentence shows up under the "Magic Training" ability.

"You begin with Novice degree in two spell talents, and two Novice spells for a total of four spells."

When you get Novice Degree in Spell Talents/Arcana, you get 2 novice spells already. Does this mean you get 6 total spells (4 from novice degree in 2 spell talents and 2 extra novice spells) or is it just 4 spells and the part that says you get 2 novice spells is unnecessary/a hold over from an earlier draft?
