Five Leagues from the Borderlands

The last tomb was crawling with Grave Walkers.

The Tower held a fey sorcerer; we lost Tring there, blasted by eldritch fire; Artum fell as we ran from the trolls of the deep woods, but for now, the village is safe. Tonight we’ll restock the gear and recruit any travellers from the inn who fancy a share of the coin. Tomorrow we’ll take the woods, then bring down that cursed tower for good. Maybe then we can rest, but there are already worrying rumours from the next valley…

Five Leagues From the Borderlands is a solo adventure wargame where you take the role of a warband of heroes and adventurers and explore a grim fantasy world full of monsters, enemies, creeping malice and exciting quests.

The whole campaign is generated procedurally with each battle created from over 100 different enemy types, 17 unique foes and 6 scenario types that can play out in a wide number of ways. As you play, you will explore the game world, discover new locations and take on quests and jobs. Your warband will gain in experience and power and find wondrous loot… or die gruesomely in brutal combat.

The game is playable with any miniatures you may own and can be played on a 2x2 foot or 3x3 foot gaming table, making it ideal for players who are just getting started on fantasy gaming or for whom this is their first miniatures game. All you need is 6 figures for your heroes and a handful of suitable enemies to fight.

Inside this 232-page full colour royal-sized (15.6cm x 23.4cm) hardback book, you’ll discover:

  • Fast-moving miniatures agnostic rules, developed specifically for solo and co-op adventure wargaming with a procedurally generating campaign world. All you need is a handful of six-sided dice, a pair of percentile dice, some paper and pens.
  • Create a warband of hard-as-nails adventurers, whether human or one of 5 other origins, and follow their story! Develop their skills, gain spells and magical weapons!
  • Explore and map out the game world, meet people on the road, discover ancient ruins, fearful villages and brooding lairs all the while engaging in desperate battles.
  • Undertake epic quests, face off against fearsome monsters and foil the enemies’ plans as they are revealed to you.
  • A host of random tables and systems provide unexpected challenges and seeds for new adventures in a living, breathing world that will unfold before your eyes.
  • Several options to tailor the game difficulty to your tastes, as well as mechanics to add your own narrative elements.

This is the third edition (first time in print) of Ivan Sorensen’s community favourite Five Leagues From the Borderlands, and has over 50 pages more than its sister book Five Parsecs From Home. If you are a returning player from a previous edition, this third edition includes conversion rules to bring your game up to speed!

I'm a first-time player who just got a little stuck during character creation. The Avatar History Table on page 26 is telling me to "Add an adventurer Friend to your warband roster sheet." How and where am I supposed to record this? There's a place for friends on the Campaign Tracking Sheet, but not on the Warband Roster. Is this a typo?

Since I don't see evidence of another system that makes use of "Friends Known" (like an NPC roster), I'm going to assume this is a typo and record my adventurer friend on the campaign sheet.

I feel the need to revisit my comments here. I can't write a review because I am a publisher as well. But I wanted to come back and say that I mostly play solo fantasy skirmish wargames, and Five Leagues From The Borderlands tops them all. Originally, I had a lot of brand loyalty because I am a fan of Ivan's work in general. But over the last year I decided to give a variety of other systems a try. None of them stuck with me. I would play two or four games and get a feeling of "sure, my guys are getting better, but what is really going on?" Five Leagues has that "really going on" vibe built right into the campaign system. As I am getting ready to start a new campaign of this game, it feels like I am coming home to a place I know and love.

The description says it can be played solo or co-op. Does that mean it can be played as a traditional rpg with a gm and a group of players?

You can. The GM makes the story and events, the players each take a member of the group. It is aimed at solo play but is easily adapted to PVP or more RPG style. Five Parsecs from Home has a section specifically on using a GM. The two games are very similar in mechanics.

Hello Ivan, I just purchased Five Legions, Five Parsecs, and the toolkit expansion. I just want to say thank you. Thank you for the time you put in, for sharing these, and for making the lore vague enough that I can easily fit in the characters I want.

I've been looking and trying to create this experience for a long time, thankfully you did it better than I could even imagine.

Could you please supply the campaign tracking sheet and warband roster sheet as a separate download for those who only have the print version? I've tried scanning them from the book but the format does not fit very well.

One question I have is in regards to scale. The book recommends 28mm miniatures. As I understand it, 28mm is closest to, and most commonly referred to as 1:64 scale. That means 1" of real distance equals 64" of game distance.

The rules recommend a 3x3 foot, or 36 inch game table. In 1:64 scale, 36 inches of game distance equals 192 feet ( 2304 inches / 12). 192 feet is only 64 yards, so this is not close to what is mentioned in the rules below:

"We don’t use an exact ground scale, as distances were selected to play well on the tabletop. In general, players assume the gaming table to represent a few hundred yards across..."

I know the intent is to abstract scale, and this information isn't very useful for actual gameplay, but it seems like it would be useful to describe the battlefield as closer to the actual size in 28mm since that's what is recommended. This would be helpful for people trying to design properly scaled terrain.

Cheers William.
The two recommended scales are 15 and 28, so to be able to work in both, the ground scale has to be pretty hazy unfortunately.
Since the ranges that feel appropriate in 15mm tend to match what players are used to in 28mm, I opted to use them as is.

I am working on a game that will use exactly scaled "true scale" terrain though, so it is something that is on my mind :)

Thanks for the reply Ivan, and I doubt many people even bother to check the scale because it works well for the rules as written.

Cheers, and great work!

I've played 5P3 extensively, and already I'm impressed with these rules. There are so many ways to do solo gaming, but essentially, I want:

1) A campaign.
2) Quick and fun tactical combat.
3) Character advancement.
4) Loot.

I've played quite a few solo systems, and this is looking to be the best yet. Games like this boil down the essence of playing traditional RPGs solo, and make it a LOT less work.

The only thing I've read so far that gives me pause is the race names. Initially, I was a little put off that Dusklings are not called Dwarves, and Fey-Blood Elves as their picture implies, but it grew on me. I like the races in 5P3, and I think Ivan did a good job here, too.

I also play Rangers of Shadow Deep, and I love it, but I like the rules for 5L3 a little better. There is just something about this ruleset that resonates with me. I've tried to dream up my own game, but it all comes back to the 5P3 and 5L3 systems doing it better.

Cheers. 2e is a complete game on its own, but 3 adds a lot of new content such as the world map and dungeon explorations. Id say play a few times and then see when you feel like upgrading.

Skirmish sandbox miniatures gaming at it's best! I've gotten the pre-release directly from Modiphius, so I can't post an official review here, but this is 5*.
The game manages to create a vibrant living world where the choices matter. Choices both strategically, on the campaign level, and tactically, on the battlefield. All of this without becoming cumbersome, as it's designed with the solo player in mind. Love it. Excellent work from Nordic Weasel Games and excellent facelifting from Modiphius.

Really enjoy the 5xfy games.
Much thanks to TheSoloWargamingShow for bringing Five Parsecs to my attention and introducing me to Ivan/Nordic Weasel's line of solo rpg/miniatures hybrid games.

I've been playing Five Leagues since the first edition and it is by far the best solo skirmish miniatures game I have ever had the pleasure of using on the tabletop. this new 3rd edition adds so much more depth and playability, it is truly inspiring. This gets five out of five stars from me!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
