Wanderhome

Auf die Wunschliste >

Wanderhome is a pastoral fantasy role-playing game about traveling animal-folk, the world they inhabit, and the way the seasons change. It is a game filled with grassy fields, mossy shrines, herds of chubby bumblebees, opossums in sundresses, salamanders with suspenders, starry night skies, and the most beautiful sunsets you can imagine.

You might be a tamarin who dances with small and forgotten gods, a leporine mail carrier who relies on moths to get packages where they belong, a little lizard with a big heart and a mysterious past, or a near-endless number of other thrilling possibilities. No matter what, we’re always travelers—animal-folk who go from village to village and get to see the length and breadth of all the world of Hæth. The seasons will change as we play, and we will change with them.

The Game

Wanderhome makes use of a unique game system inspired by the No Dice, No Masters engine, developed by Avery Alder and Benjamin Rosenbaum for Dream Askew and Dream Apart. Each player will make a character with the help of one of fifteen possible playbooks, making choices about their personality, animal-form, look, and passions. Each of these playbooks give you a radically different approach both to navigating the setting and growing over time. From the carefree Ragamuffin to the introverted Poet, from the Guardian and their young ward to the lonely Exile, from the cheerful Dancer to the moody Veteran, there is plenty of space in Wanderhome to imagine every possible world that lives in your heart.

Once you’ve created your character, you and your fellow travelers guide them through the dreamlike pastoral world of Hæth. There are no dice in Wanderhome. Instead, you can inconvenience yourself or step outside your comfort zone in order to get tokens, and then turn around and spend those tokens to tackle larger problems and help make the world a better, kinder space.

Parade of Small & Forgotten Gods by Jennie Lindberg

Wanderhome is structured with an emphasis on safety and care, built on my own work designing safety mechanics and constructing alternate safety approaches beyond the industry standards. It features a bespoke set of safety mechanics built around empowering players to guide the story however they want, which are used consistently throughout the game. It is also designed to collaboratively set the tone and articulate a version of Hæth that's perfect for your group.

Wanderhome is a GM-agnostic game–while you can play with a Guide facilitating the world, you can also approach it without anyone in charge, where everyone takes equal part in the collaborative conversation. And while you can play Wanderhome in as little as 3-4 hours, the longer you stay with Wanderhome the more the world will grow with you. The months will pass over time and as each season concludes you’ll get to make new choices about your character, advancing them in new directions and helping them grow in ways you didn’t think was possible. If you play long enough, eventually your characters will retire or grow apart, and the journey will continue with brand-new travelers and a vast world ahead of you.

Among The Hills by Nadhir Nor

The World of Hæth

Wanderhome is set in the wholly original fantasy world of Hæth, inspired by the works of Brian Jacques, Tove Jansson, and Hayao Miyazaki. The game hints at and builds a mythological language around forces like the bitter King of the Floating Mountain, the Lily Rebellion, the Slobbering God and the blade that killed her, and the fall of the great dragons of old, but refuses to elaborate or define them—leaving that exercise to the players through the journey itself. Instead, Wanderhome is focused on the lives of ordinary people, and the world that exists for farmers, merchants, and crafts-folk.

Wanderhome is a world filled with animal-folk and their buggy livestock. Unlike many worlds with animal-folk, there is no morality or judgement ascribed to the various animals of Hæth—a snake is just as capable of being a kindly farmer as a rabbit, and you can’t assume much about someone based on what animal they are. You might find a fluffy shepherd with a herd of bumblebees, a shrewish merchant riding a stag beetle the size of a house, a lonely fox riding a grasshopper from place to place, or a praying mantis that hangs out in a gecko’s pocket.

Testimonials

“I grew up reading Redwall. The opening pages were full of lavish descriptions of playful merriment. I loved those pages. But they always gave way to chapters about war, pillaging, and slaughter. Wanderhome asks: what if the meadow gets to stay safe and happy this time? What if those opening pages last forever?”

— Avery Alder, Buried Without Ceremony

"After reading Sleepaway, I was excited to see what Jay could do with Wanderhome - and I was right to be excited. What's contained within this book is a keenly-observed world of miniature interlocking details and a thousand invitations to go and explore inside it; it is a patchwork clockwork machine that paints a universe in strokes both broad and minute, and gives authority to the player to establish their own foothold within. The world of Wanderhome is hard, but not grim; kind, but not saccharine; unreal, but not plastic."

— Grant Howitt, Rowan, Rook and Decard

Playing Wanderhome feels like taking a beautiful trip with friends — through different kinds of game mechanics, different kinds of playstyles, different emotional experiences. I find myself coming back to the stories we told and the characters we met in Wanderhome again and again."

 — Jeff Stormer, Party Of One

“Playing Wanderhome is an experience of explorative worldbuilding where the players can delight as much as their characters do at stunning vistas, changing seasons, lost gods, or a good cheese scone all found in the company of good friends. No game has made me want to give up oneshots and settle down into a campaign again as much as Wanderhome.”

 — Tony Vasinda, Plus One Exp

Who knew a game about being on the road could feel so much like home?

— Brennan Lee Mulligan, Dimension 20

“Absolutely incredible."

— Matthew Mercer, Critical Role

I bought this outside of drivethrurpg, but I'd still like give a summary for those potentially looking to buy it or not.

At its core, beyond the beautiful art and typography, this "game" is more about a description of an idealistic world setting where violence and non-good intentions are metaphysically forbidden, with question prompts and descriptions that could be applied to basically any RPG on how to focus on roleplaying through a more intimate lens.

The archetypes act as its open-ended sense of class with suggested personality traits, similar to an in-depth look of chronicles and backgrounds in other games.

The world feels as wide as an ocean, but as deep as a puddle, with how open-ended it is, as if the game itself is just one big prompt without a map. This can be good or bad depending on what you want from it as a worldbuilding tool. If you want specific details of locations and characters to easily plop into your world, this is not where you will find it,...See more

Can kids (3/4 years old) play it?

Hi, sorry for the late reply! Young kids can totally play it, although you might want to abstract rules or let them be more inventive — young children are notoriously creative, and often have better ideas for their fun than a book can provide.

Gameplay was magical. The setting details and details in the book are so lovingly crafted. This is by far my favorite new RPG. We played the GMless option and had a blast creating locations, npcs, and challenges together. A refreshing change from dark and violence filled RPGs and a delight all around! I can't give it enough stars.

The Full-size Preview is missing. Plus, the preview should include details about the system, setting, and characters.

How about you do some research of your own then instead of leaving pass-agg comments. Go read a review. Check you-tube for an actual play - I know Dicebreaker have one up on their site because I watched it.

This book has been lovingly crafted and it shows. It's broken down nice and clearly. There is no waffle or pretention *Onyx path cough cough*. All of the art is great and made me feel like I'm reading Wind in the willows or something similar. It's not stuffed full of art for the sake of it, rather to break up the journey through the book.

Oh and it blows products produced by so called BIG companies out of the water - it's actually been proofed properly. I hate when I buy a product and there are spelling mistakes all over the place and they've even credited proof readers.

I look forward to running this game for lots of people over the coming months. So you're only cutting off your own nose if you don't do a bit of research.

This page, where the consumer is invited to purchase a product, is the publisher's opportunity to entice the consumer to purchase, to put their best foot forward, and remove as many barriers (such as forcing the consumer to "do their own research" or click away from the site) as possible toward a sale. DTRPG provides a mechanism for publishers to include previews, product details, videos, and links to other resources. Heck, even just a link to the product webpage (https://www.possumcreekgames.com/wanderhome) would have been welcome. Compare this page to that for Hard Wired Island (Is this from a BIG company? No). It provides much better information plus a link to a free, 55-page preview. This is not passive-aggression. This is (terse) advice from someone with 20+ years of marketing experience and 30+ years of gaming experience. I might like this product. I have admiration for Ryuutama and anthro settings (I have bought way too much stuff from Sanguine over the years), but there is not enough information...See more

"How about you do some research of your own"

And why should I do that, when there are thousands of other rpgs here on drivethrurpg that DON'T force me to do extensive resarch? Seriously, why should I take your word for it, when I can look up another product and actually determine if it suits me?

Spending $25 for a product without a preview could work out....or not. I can't do "research" on every product out there and quite honestly your comments are beyond pass-agg they are outright aggressive.

I might get around to this game at some point, but you're done the product a great disservice. The publisher needs to figure out if they want to sell this game .... or not. If they do, they need to provide enough information at the point where it is sold to enable people to make a decision.

Hi Patrick, thanks for the suggestion to include a link to our website. It's been included! DriveThruRPG is not our main marketplace (in fact, we only put Wanderhome up here due to popular demand, and I only happened to stumble on your reply while looking for something else) so we're still learning the ins and outs of etiquette and formatting on here.

I am a huge Wanderhome fan. Jay was kind enough to come play with us on stream.

If you want to check it out the link is here https://youtu.be/5lAVDt2kDAE
If you want to skip to the end where we talk with Jay about our experience playing it's here https://youtu.be/5lAVDt2kDAE

Jay builds on the well established BoB system with a full and robust world ripe for storytelling. Every Kith class is filled with evocative choices and all of moves are written well. this is the first game in a long time where I have wanted to run a campaign in the setting so that we could see how some of the world building elements unfold in our narrative. Specifically the seasons and months of they year.

DriveThruRPG doesn't support/allow links in the description. Maybe if you pasted in the actual URL and left it as text so we could copy and paste it -- that might work. One pasted in link to a website with all the info you tried to link to would be great. Quick and Full previews would also be great.
