The Dark

On June 6th at 10:06 am. It happened. The sky turned absolute black and the lights everywhere went out. Cell phones stopped working, flashlights went dead, everything electronic failed. The world was plunged into complete darkness. Everything was engulfed in pitch black unless there was a candle, fire, or other natural light source near. With this the chaos ensued.
As if possessed by otherworldly forces, over half of the population suddenly and violently lost their minds. People immediately began screaming and attacking anyone in sight. The screams of the dying and insane filled the air. If these newly maddened could find no one, they attacked themselves, often by clawing their own eyes or slashing open their stomachs to die from the self-inflicted wounds. Unless something else finished them first. Maybe it was the sudden shift of the world or maybe it was the Dark itself; you also went a bit mad at that moment. You might have been at school, work, or just waking up from a night out. Whatever the circumstance you were in, this is the new reality you were suddenly faced with. This is the world now.
You managed to survive the first few hours. It didn’t take long for the totally insane ones to kill vast amounts of people then eventually themselves. They don’t pose much of a problem for you anymore. As the screams die down, you sense something more sinister in the darkness. A bigger problem lurks now. As if the Dark itself wishes you to suffer horribly and die. You can’t shake this feeling of being hunted. There is something very evil in the Dark... And where the hell did all these damn roaches come from?

The Dark: Dawn of the Eschaton is a Tabletop RPG set in our world in present day which something very bad has happened. The world is now engulfed in complete darkness. No sunlight, no moonlight, no stars shining anywhere. Electricity no longer functions. Electrons do not flow through wires. Any source of light, typically from flame, penetrates the darkness just mere feet as if the air itself is thick with this Dark. Plants will soon be dead. Strange fungus is sprouting everywhere. Most animals have either died or seemed to have simply vanished. Not all animals are gone, however. As if by some force of the Darkness itself a few animals have quickly changed. Having traded their herbivorous nature for vicious meat-eating terrors. Food is quickly becoming scarce as it gets consumed by the roaches that seem to be able to chew their way through almost anything. All of that is the least of a players’ problems, however, because supernatural monsters now hide in basements and closets or prowl the streets looking for anyone to kill.

Congratulations on the continued effort updating this title. It's great to see independent publishers supporting their work. I read it when it was on 1.0 and the improvement is clear.

I confess I don't plan to run the RAW of this game, but I'll certainly use the setting. It's full of great ideas and I encourage every one reading this to take a look.

Thank you for your work and effort, and happy gaming!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
