Fate Condensed is an updated, streamlined, 50-pages-or-less version of Fate Core System. It's completely stand-alone and features new refinements to the Fate Core engine that'll have it running better than ever. Call it Fate 4.5, if you like—it covers all the ground (and uses the same skills) as Fate Core, in about a sixth the size.

You can use Fate Condensed (FCon) to drive any game, any scenario, with proactive, capable player-characters leading dramatic lives. The easy-to-digest rules are presented here with a minimum of verbiage, letting you get to the table and roll the dice, fast.

For game creators, the text of Fate Condensed is available for development under an open license, at a word-count that won't bust your budget when making an all-in-one-book stand-alone game Powered by Fate.

Fate veterans will appreciate the refinements and additions to the Fate Core engine, including:

  • A shift to one-point stress boxes to help reduce player confusion.
  • The use of “Balsera Style” initiative (also known as “elective action order” or “popcorn initiative”) as the default rather than using skills to determine turn order.
  • Improvements to advancement, eliminating significant milestones and finessing major milestones to compensate.
  • Changing active opposition so it's no longer separate from the defend action.
  • Eight pages of optional rules to make building your variant of choice easy, including Dresden Files Accelerated scale rules, extreme consequences, countdowns, and a variety of ways to make your Big Bads bigger and badder.

Fate Condensed.
Refined. Streamlined. Stand-alone. Open licensed.

The revision should be somewhere in the PDF and also the perhaps in the filename.

Do I have to re-checkout to get the latest or are the links under "You Have Purchased This Product" the latest?

Should be the latest to the limited extent I understand the technology of DriveThruRPG.

The title page has text reading "Last updated May 5, 2020." — So, yes, the revision date is in the PDF.

Revision... 6, I think? Here's the changelog!

===

The overlap of terminology between Fate Core and Fate Condensed on advancement produced some confusion (as major milestones work differently in each). So for the purposes of clarity, we're renaming Condensed's "major milestone" to "breakthrough" and will remove "minor" from "minor milestone." This produces a few small ripples through the text.

Page 3, advancement bullet now reads "Advancement functions a little differently; we’ve eliminated significant milestones and finessed major ones (as breakthroughs) to compensate (page 39)."

page 38: On severe consequences bullet, major milestone -> breakthrough

page 39:
minor milestone -> milestone (multiple occurrences)

Aside from the "Fate veterans will appreciate" bullet list above, it also offers a compact version of Fate (with a few improvements) that cleaves closer to the assumed defaults of Fate Core's example configuration.

So how do I do magic or psionic for instance with Fate Condensed ?

PUBLISHER
Condensed isn't an offer-every-option-ever-for-every-circumstance. I mean, Fate Core System isn't even that. Nor is it—nor any other Fate thing out there which might have a magic or psionics system in it that you'd like to adapt for your home game—inaccessible to you if you're using Fate Condensed as your starting point.

Just like Fate Core System, Fate Condensed is a starting point.

I'm not sure why this isn't obvious?

Well, I will try to explain. First take in consideration I have Attention Deficit Disorder.

I have the french translation of Fate Core and I have bought the Original Version.

I have understood while I was reading Fate Core that Extras was the mean to emulate mecha, magic, psionics etc.

I have found Fate Core to be extremely hard to read, Fae and Fate Condensed were easier to understood by comparison. I am just disapointed that mechanics which are important to the game like extras are only in the complicated book (for me anyway)

Aha! That explains much. Here's the thing, tho: Extras amount to "you can make all sorts of extensions to the system by treating anything like a character which can be constructed out of whatever parts you like: aspects, skills, stunts, stress tracks."

That's it. That whole chapter in Fate Core System is, largely, just giving examples of that core idea.

You don't HAVE to use Extras to do things like Magic and Psionics. That's just one way to do them. Let me give an example of another (light weight) way to do it (hopefully this helps):

You have an Aspect which somehow explains that you know magic. _MAYBE_ it's part of your High Concept: "Wizard of the High Realm" or something like that. Or maybe your GM will require you to use a specific Aspect for it (because maybe the cost of being Magical is that you have fewer other Aspects).

What that gives you is the justification for explaining _any_ of your actions as being magical in nature instead of mundane in nature. Without it, when you make an attack, you might have to justify it as "I throw a rock at him" (which means you need to have access to a rock). But with the Magic related Aspect, you can instead say "I shoot a mana bolt at him." The two attacks are resolved EXACTLY the same way, the Magic related Aspect just gives you a justification for different...See more

Added a bullet:
Create an Advantage has been tweaked to offer better clarity and agency around the discovery of existing unknown aspects (page XX).

Final bullet doesn't need to list specific options beyond full defense, especially given how the options chapter has expanded to approx 14 pages, so the language is compressed on the last bullet.

Now reads:
Full defense is presented as optional and has been altered a bit to accommodate the expanded scope of the defend action (page XX). Other standard rules options are presented as well, starting on page XX.

Updated again today, Feb 27, 2020. Probably the last round of revisions before the index goes in.

High level changes:

Turned the blue accents black because the print version will have a black & white interior.

Added to the rules options chapter:
+ a condensed version of the Obstacles section from Fate Adversary Toolkit.
+ a one page writeup on considerations in changing the skill list.

Added a rules summary in the back of the book.

Added space for an index in the back of the book. Index is in development.

Other specifics follow:

Added a page reference to the changing the skill list section at the bottom of page 9:

If you’re considering making your own skill list for your game and are looking for some ideas to kick-start your imagination, see page 46.

Page 32's final Teamwork paragraph's first sentence needed a reword as it appeared too restrictive on review.

Updated Fate Condensed today, Feb 21, 2020. Here's the change log! Lots of changes in this revision. Enjoy!

page 12:

Second bullet

Original:

If you’re inclined towards a unified track, add a couple more boxes to make up for it.

New:

If you’re inclined towards a unified track, add three more boxes to make up for it, and use the higher of Physique or Will to lengthen it as indicated.

---

Appended the following to the end of the third bullet, mainly to highlight the numerics of the different methods. Condensed's method offers more consistent stress absorption than Core's does, but veteran Fate players may miss the higher effective totals, which is the intent of offering this option.

Added:

(With the older style, a [1][2] track absorbs 2 to 3 stress, [1][2][3] = 3 to 6, [1][2][3][4] = 4 to 10.)

New section talking about versions of Fate, because people keep wanting it to be a this-or-that thing instead of recognizing it's all Fate Core. :)

What Version Is This?

Since late 2012, there has been only one version of Fate from Evil Hat: Fate Core System, the fourth edition of the system.

Ah, but what about Fate Accelerated, the perspicacious Fate afficionado might ask? Thing is, that’s Fate Core too—it’s the same system, just with different dial settings (i.e., configuration options/flavors) for stress tracks, the skill list, stunts, and NPC design. Any apparent differences in the core functions of the system are due to accidents of parallel development and can be considered unintentional—with apologies to the rules lawyers out there! If a conflict between the designs exists, Fate Core System is the authority.

These two perspectives on Fate Core come together here, in Fate Condensed—very literally, in fact. Condensed...See more

Page 27 isn't an appropriate place to have it since that page is talking about adding and removing aspects, not story details.

What you're looking for is on the current draft's page 24:

Invoking to Declare Story Details
You may spend a fate point to add an important or unlikely detail to the story based on an aspect in play. In cases where “aspects are always true” (page 22) suffices, you do not need to spend the fate point; paying is for when it’s a stretch.

Would love, love, love to see a super-simple magic system included in Fate Condensed as an optional rule, so people can jump right into a fantasy game or even a supers game.

Collegia Arcana Magic works for me.

Or else I'd like something similar to Nathan Hare's High Fantasy Magic (https://fate-srd.com/odds-ends/high-fantasy-magic) but even more stripped down. As in:

1. Have an aspect that says you can do magic.

2. Use a stunt slot to define the type of magic you can do: Fire Magic, Healing Magic, Illusion Magic, etc. (And BTW, you can take several magic stunts if desired.)

3. Use your regular skill set to perform actions: Shoot to hit someone with a bolt of fire, Disable to melt the lock on a door, etc.

And that's it! Not essential, but it would be a nice addition.

With apologies, I consider that out of scope. Magic is too specific, IMO, and there are hundreds of setting-affecting ways you could take it on; I believe those should be developed on a per-implementation basis. There are plenty of examples out there. I'd rather keep FCon focused on options-for-all-types where it offers options at all.

I hear you, but in that case, we've got a number of very affordable products that have a Fate-driven magic system of one form or another in them, and I feel adaptation would be trivial in many of those cases for someone who owns both. So... :)

Nope, "if that" is intended. As in, you could start with less than that list, if you're brave enough to do so. "If that" is a phrase that essentially has an implicit few words in it; spelled out, it would be "if even that much" or similar.

Hello and thanks for this pdf! I've noticed the cover image is quite low res. Was this intentional in order to cut down on file size or as a literal statement of the "condensed" nature? Not very important, but it's got my curiosity. Great product.

I don't think it's that low resolution (I know it isn't on my end) but the compression may have gone over the top there. I'll try to keep an eye on it in the next revision round, tho since it's a PDF, not a print product (yet), it's rarely a big deal if an image isn't as high res as it could be.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
