Fate Horror Toolkit

Auf die Wunschliste >

Something lurks in the shadows...

Maybe it’s a masked killer, or a creature from the unknown depths, or a psychotic porcelain doll. Or maybe it’s just a cat, and the threat stands right behind you!

The Fate Horror Toolkit offers a variety of tools, mechanics, and hacks to help you develop thematic horror in your game. Explore what horror is and how to employ it effectively at your table. Learn how to develop horrific elements in Fate—a game system designed around competent, proactive characters not usually seen in horror. Pick from a variety of mechanics to easily design your own game about the things that go bump in the night.

The Fate Horror Toolkit is a Fate Core supplement. This Toolkit includes:

 • Extensive tools to make scary and effective horror adversaries and running Fate games where doom is inevitable
 • Modified and thematic compels designed to help up the suspense and visceral horror elements in your games
 • A variety of new aspect types such as legacy and intensity aspects to help develop thematic horror elements and define boundaries
 • A campaign framework for running horror stories based on teamwork—particularly good for younger audiences.

Fate Toolkits. All the tools to build your stage.

Just bought it, but only had time to read index. This may be a stupid question: this is a toolkit from where you can choose some additional rules, tools and ideas as you wish for your horror genred game, campaign or scenario?

Not everything on the book "must be used"? :D

And in addition:

"First, determine the threat faced by the players on their mission. The usual rules
for playing the opposition on page 222 of Fate Core System apply.

In each exchange of the contest, the threat attacks one or more of the PCs
rather than competing for victories, and the players roll against passive opposition guided by how far they’re going and how many consumables are available in the target area."

Does this mean that the contest turns occasionally into a conflict?

First players roll against passive opposition, then the threat attacks players and this turns into a conflict and players can defend — and this Will Be solved as conflict. Then players again roll for another opposition to get victory point? And this goes on?

Hi Aleksi, all the Fate Toolkit are designed to be, well, toolkits. Take whatever works for you and leave behind what doesn't!

Thank you so much for the answer Sean! :)

How about the that rules section I mentioned, did I understood it correctly (I mean "fast scavenging" and threats example)?

Usually the Fate says that everytime attacking in a contest turns into a conflict.

Thank you in advance!

Hi Alexi, go back up one paragraph "you can instead use a special type of contest". This is an optional rule (as they all are) for gaining free invokes on consumables that unlike most contests threatens the PCs health. So they are accumulating victories (collecting consumables) but the threats around them are potentially causing them harm.

I downloaded a fresh copy of this PDF from my DriveThruRPG Library, but the file title was "zzzz_horribly_fucked_up_do_not_use.pdf". I assume this is an error, but the title also makes me think maybe I'm not looking at the most current version. Can you resolve this for me?

The download associated with FHT is named Fate_Horror_Toolkit.pdf -- "zzzz horribly fucked up do not use" is the name of a private, cloned product listing of FHT that isn't this one, and which was named that to get it to the bottom of my file list because I wasn't given a method to delete that cloned listing. If something's getting named that in a download from the DTRPG library, that's a DTRPG software bug, not something associated with this public, long-selling listing of FHT.

there are time I read forums of RPGS and I wonder 'what the hell happened to my gaming community?" especially when they spot stuff that has a hint of swastika..then i read the way people shut down a troll in this thread, and I realize there are still some very cool, very SMART gamers. Thank you, you made my day!

The preview mentions a "Fate Accessibility Toolkit" which doesn't appear to be available yet. What exactly is that?

Pierre, I'm sorry that a science fiction setting that allows for wheelchairs on submarines stretches past the limits of your imagination. I'm doubly sorry that it's given you such an axe to grind that you need to bring it up repeatedly in discussions on unrelated products. And finally, I'm sorry that you're an awful person. Please leave my community again.

I dunno Pierre, we've already produced games you can play, so I figure we've cleared that bar.

Brutal but deserved comeback.

Great product by the way, and I for one is definitely intruiged by an accessability toolkit, so Pierre seems wrong on that count as well.

Keep up the good work!

Edit: For those who are reading this and confused, in seems Pierre has deleted his comment. He basically complained about the idea of an Accessability Toolkit and sarcastically finished by asking what his game demo for the mentally differently-abled is and telling him to “put your money where your mouth is”

Thanks for that summation. I figured it was someone not owning up to their terribleness, but really wondered what beef anyone could have with an Accessibility Toolkit.

While hurling a few other slurs he also called me a racist for... uh... publishing a science fiction submarine setting that stretched (broke!) the limits of credulity by having space in the futuristic submarine for someone in a wheelchair. His logic was ... inescapable?

You're right, Pierre, space wheelchairs are definitely silly ... unlike such plausible hard-SF tropes like teleporters, planet-destroying death rays, galactic empires modeled on ancient Rome, single-biome planets, antigravity fields, aliens that look like green-skinned humans, or interbreeding between humans and said aliens. I'm certainly never going to play an RPG that includes silly things that couldn't happen in real life. OK, back to my D&D game...

In 2015, the van I drove for work was hit by a semi. My back was broken and the end result of surgery and nerve damage was I am now in a wheelchair. I've visited the U-boat at the Chicago Museum of Science & Industry and, while it was tight in my manual wheelchair, I was able to get through it. So I think the accessibility toolkit AND the setting sound cooler than cool. You may quote me as a gamer since 1976 and disabled since 2015.

Incidentally, I have the most amazing power wheelchair too! :)

Fred CAN'T delete your comments, Pierre. If publishers could delete, there's one or two I've made that I'm sure the publisher in question would like to be rid of.

If your comments were deleted, it was OneBookShelf/DTRPG that deleted them.

U505 is such a great tour. I'd recommend it for anyone who wants to know what a Uboat looks like on the inside!
