WHAT IS LOW FANTASY GAMING?

Low Fantasy Gaming (“LFG”) is a tabletop role-playing game built for sword & sorcery adventures in low magic worlds.

Rules Light

LFG is rules light (184 pages), with a heavy emphasis on Games Master (“GM”) rulings. It’s a hybrid of old school and modern game design, based on the 1d20 Open Game Licence.

Fast & Engaging Combat

Combat is designed to be fast and engaging, with minimal waiting between turns. Creativity is encouraged via martial exploits and magic.

Dangerous & Gritty

Battle is genuinely dangerous and every skirmish takes a toll. The threat of serious injury or death is never far away.

A “Realistic” World

LFG worlds tend to mimic our own classical or medieval periods. Humans are the default player race. Magic and fantastic monsters exist, but are very rare. The Midlands Low Magic Sandbox Setting supplement is an example (also on DTRPG).

Dark & Dangerous Magic

Magic is not only rare, it is dark and inherently dangerous. Sorcery is a power not meant for mortals, and adventurers engage with it at their peril.

Riches & Glory

LFG is about exploring the unknown; delving into the lost places of the world to unearth new mysteries. Player characters are not epic heroes charged with saving the world; they are bold adventurers seeking riches and glory.

Open World

LFG is made for short, episodic adventures in an open world. Mechanics and random tables support GM improvisation, empowering the referee to handle any situation or side trek.

Site Support

Further LFG material is available at the Low Fantasy Gaming website for free download, including reviews, GM screen inserts, illustrated character sheets, pregens, Midlands region map, 6 city maps and more. A custom character sheet is available on Roll20, Foundry, Fantasy Grounds MoreCore, and Tabletop Simulator for easy online play.

Print Copy

At more than 20,000 PDF downloads and growing, the LFG ruleset is also available via Lulu in Softcover, Spiral Bound and Hardcover formats (softcover & spiral at cost).

Just downloaded this game. I'm impressed - it seems to be a great system. What's the difference between the original version and the Deluxe version?

Hi Peter,

Glad you're liking it so far :) Deluxe is 285 or so pages compared to LFG Original about 175. Besides the extra PC classes (monk, ranger, artificer, cultist, and a slightly revised fighter), it incorporates the 4 GM toolkits - Mass Battle, Hirelings, Blackpowder/naval combat, and Traps. It has more monsters, and an expanded Exploration section (including tables for Overland Events, Underground Events, etc). I forget exactly but there are other additions to the GM section, hmm Tavern Brawl table, Diseases & Parasites... Spells are renamed (but with a table in the back to convert to original if you prefer). I think that's most of it. Also it comes in two versions: Full Colour and B&W line art.

I literally bought this system on a whim, having heard nothing about it- I’m not sure if I saw an add, or just searched low fantasy on drive thru- and was fairly blown away. The more I read, the better it sounded. Very very lax, simple, or genuinely unique rule, I could rant until I was blue in the face. EXTREMELY impressed. I was going to run a home brew Lamentations game, but in light of recent events I decided to change systems, but now I’m looking forward to it. Definitely worth checking out!!

Also, perhaps it's my unfamiliarity with OSR type games, but I don't quite understand the "adventure" as a measurement of time...

Could anyone help with this?

It usually means the adventure or module you are currently playing; its very flexible, ranging from a few hours to possibly months. Then you have periods of downtime (equally flexible, but generally at least a few days) between adventures. It's up to the GM. LFG is designed for short, episodic adventures (meant to be played over a few sessions).

So excited for the Deluxe Edition. Trying to get my group to give this a shot. Currently playing 5E, and have already implemented some of the Hardmode rules. Love your work!

On a more unfortunate note, I tried to pledge money to the Kickstarter, but my bank did not allow it (I'm beyond furious with them) and I didn't notice the email in time. So, my $30 Aus dollars were never taken out, and now I've missed out completely on supporting and getting some cool stuff. Pretty bummed, to say the least.

Oh well. Still excited for this!

Hi Matthew,

Very glad to receive this kind of feedback, thanks for reaching out! I hope your group gets to give it a go ;D

Actually the KS PDF rewards haven't begun going out yet, due to DTRPG's publisher tools still being down (even though the customer pages are now working, it seems) - ongoing server migration problems... So if you send me an email at psikerlord@live.com we can sort something out re KS rewards if you like.

Cheers! Steve.

Wow, this is embarrassing to reply so much later, but I had a lot going in my personal life almost immediately after posting this. Also, I didn't necessarily expect a response, so... thank you!! Anyway, it's okay, I honestly just wanted to support what you're doing because I actually believe in it. Would a discount on the hardcopy I'll be buying have hurt? Or my name mentioned as a supporter? Well, no... Haha! But that's okay, you win some you lose some
Anyway, thank you for answering me. Truly appreciate it!

Oh! And I may be trying out the system (FINALLY!) tomorrow night! Can't wait! And again, thank you Steve. Sorry about the disgustingly late reply

Most welcome Matt. Hey if you do end up trying the system out, and post a summary of your session (needn't be long, a couple lines if you like) in the review section here (or on our MeWe or Reddit or Facebook), I'll send you a "print at cost" code when they become available (should be in the next two weeks).

Hi Guy, thanks for reaching out. The deadline is 31 June 2019, but we hope to have it out earlier than that. There are some art assets due in March 2019 however, so not before then.

Rules light at 184 pages? I am very interested in this and the new kickstarter. Are firearms available? (like Warhammer Fantasy) I have to check out some reviews.

Hi Chad, yes blackpowder weapons are included in the Deluxe Edition as an option. "Relatively" rules light, compared to say 5e (about 900 pages for PHB, DMG and MM). In actual play, the mechanics are fast and simple.

Thank you for the lightning fast reply. (wasnt expecting that) Id like to have some primitive firearms (Like warhammer fantasy) muskets & such. The Artificer intrigues me. (maybe something along the lines of an empire engineer). Id like to find out more about that since i saw a sample character with some kind of "chain-blade". (chainsaw?)
Rules light to me , means something like B/X Dungeons & Dragons, two books at 64 pages each. Im definitely going to take a look, find reviews and check out that Kickstarter. Thank you.

Hi,
I've downloaded your game and I love the look of it.
I'm a not familiar with d&d.
I have a question about the Barbarian Hit Point example on page 13. Shouldn't the level 2 gain be 13 = 3+6+2(class table)+2(Con modifier) ?
Perhaps I've missed something.
Best regards

Hi RG, thanks for your message. The HP gain each level is (for a Barbarian) d6+6 + Con bonus. Sorry that middle column of the Advancement table is confusing and I will remove it if I ever do a second edition! So a fighter would be d5+5 + Con bonus, a Rogue d4+4 + Con bonus etc. Right up to 9th, and then at 10th, everyone just gets a set HP amount (no Con bonus, no dice roll).

Regarding the Hit Points column in class Advancement tables, what function do the numbers 1-9 in that column serve?

To use the Barbarian as an example, that is meant to indicate the PC gets 1d6+6 hp (+ con bonus) per level up to 9th level. Then at 10-12th level, the PC gets +4 hp only (ie not 1d6+6 or con bonus, just +4). Older dnd versions used a similar method. Hope that makes sense.

Yes, that makes it a lot clearer than the rules do.

Admittedly I have only read up to the Classes chapter, but so far I have found the book to be written in a nice and concise way - except for the repetition of the numbers 1-9 in the HP column of the Class Advancement tables and the second paragraph under the subtitle “Hit Points” on page 12.

Reading just that paragraph I was left with the understanding that I will roll for HP for levels 1 through 12 AND always add whatever bonus is mentioned in the Class Advancement table, while only adding Con Mod between levels 1 through 9. It reads like there will be cases where the roll, Con bonus and an extra bonus from the table are in effect at the same time. There is no wording there to suggest the rolling stops at a specific level.

And since the text basically says “there will be numbers in that table you add to your HP roll”, you can probably see why the presence of the numbers 1-9 can be confusing. They seem like something...See more

Thanks Janne yes that's all fair enough. When I wrote it I had in mind folks who knew the old advancement systems, and readers would simply carry their understanding across. A poor assumption obviously! If I do a second edition I will certainly make it clearer as you suggest.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
